This study critically discusses various theories on “listening·speaking” and “caring” to adapt “caring thinking,” which is recently explored in Korean language education and other fields, into the listening·speaking education. Further, a communication model is developed to reflect the intentions of listening·speaking education. The model is based on the characteristics of elementary school education which sets forming a desirable personality of learners as its aim. It is also derived from the awareness that Korean language education is a basic subject of thinking and the activity of listening/speaking is the core part of the acts of caring. The study consists of two main subjects. First, it suggests a model of communication for elementary listening·speaking education which is manipulated to activate caring thinking as the filter before creative thinking or critical thinking that have been conventionally emphasized in Korean language education. Second, it discusses the direction for the contents and means of the future listening·speaking education. Along with self-reflection on Korean language education which has mainly stressed rationality and efficiency, this study is part of the efforts to materialize a new direction for listening·speaking education for future generations.","PeriodicalId":83500,"journal":{"name":"Western journal of speech communication : WJSC","volume":"342 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74098140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results of my analysis are as follow. First, The intonation used in the polite expressions reveals a significant correlation by gender. The nonassertive ‘M:’ was used more frequently by female speakers while the assertive ‘HL’ and ‘LHL’ were used more frequently by male speakers. Second, connective endings used in polite expression also differ by gender. Female speakers use a higher percentage and variety of polite expression connective endings than male speakers. Third, The meaning of polite expression is more diverse in female speakers while male speakers mainly used in the sense of ‘blame.’ Male speakers are relatively insensitive to perceptions of politeness and utilize socially high hierarchical politeness strategies.","PeriodicalId":83500,"journal":{"name":"Western journal of speech communication : WJSC","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74050109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study resulted in the development of four empathy scale: one for spouses, one for parents to use for children, one for children to use for their parents, and one for children to use for their siblings. The preliminary questions were comprised of 40 basic items including cognitive, affective, and expressive empathy, which were classified by type, and then modified to fit the respondents and subject in the family sub - system. The first item was selected for each scale using exploratory factor analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis was also performed to confirm the fitness of the factor structure and the validity of the question. As a result, the final questions were selected for each of the four scales and were verified through proper analysis, which confirmed their use as a valid test. The scales developed in this study are expected to be used to measure empathy realization aspect between spouses, parents and children, and siblings, according to the family sub - system. It is also expected to help promote empathic communication between family members.","PeriodicalId":83500,"journal":{"name":"Western journal of speech communication : WJSC","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81934526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As outline of the model for the validation process, the argument-based approach to validity as presented by Michael Kane was evaluated. The argument-based approach provides a framework for test score interpretation; its use is supported by appropriate and validated evidence. Based on Kane’s test validation approach, which constructed the claim and assumption of inferential processes, the argument-based approach described the assessment validation procedure into interpretive argument and validity argument. The validation of KSL speaking assessment using the argument-based approach was designed to support claims on the intended purposes of the assessment. This study presented each model of interpretive argument related to KSL speaking assessment for summative and high-stakes proficiency assessments.","PeriodicalId":83500,"journal":{"name":"Western journal of speech communication : WJSC","volume":"26 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74009067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This basic research can identify the type of education that can enhance the reliability of rating in speaking tests, which are mainly assessed using subjective assessment criteria. In this study, we intended to study the rating tendencies, reliability, and consistency of raters by conducting two separate experiments under the same conditions and separated by a certain interval. As a result of the analysis using the FACETS program based on the Many-Facets Rasch Measurement model, the second rating saw an overall improvement in inter-rater reliability; however, raters’ consistency varied regardless of their career experience in the field of Korean language education. It is necessary to train raters to improve assessment reliability, and these study results confirmed that individualized training that can be customized for each rater’s personality or characteristics is needed. In addition, this could be an alternative to training raters if the intention is to improve self-consistency through self-observation by using scientific tools that can measure the rater’s reliability and consistency.","PeriodicalId":83500,"journal":{"name":"Western journal of speech communication : WJSC","volume":"89 1","pages":"105-128"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85636752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
