The scientific process largely works through repetition, which by definition does not apply here. Still, science can help us model fat tails that reach far beyond human imagination. Statisticians and economists have discovered patterns confirming the existence of fat tails in everything from stock market returns to extreme weather events. A 1-in-100-year event is indeed rare, by definition. But it may well dwarf all else in impact. And by now we know that 1-in-100-year storms — the hallmark often used for infrastructure — may be showing up much more frequently.","PeriodicalId":83480,"journal":{"name":"Wall Street journal (Eastern ed.)","volume":"21 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72415512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Can they stay on track? Once considered to be a dying industry, railroads have made a strong comeback and are poised to become much busier places in the future. The forecasts for freight growth are substantial and these are prompting railroads to plan for numerous capacity additions. At the same time, the federal government is looking to railroads to handle more and faster passenger trains and install an extensive anti-collision system known as positive train control. This article describes how the Wall Street Journal recently held an email discussion about the future of rail with panelists from the private and public sides of the business.","PeriodicalId":83480,"journal":{"name":"Wall Street journal (Eastern ed.)","volume":"43 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80860392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
