We argue that new strategies of dealing with the dead emerged which, in the long run, replaced established patterns: by the mid-19th century burial places were managed according to prevailing notions of efficiency, elaborate marketing schemes were implemented, and administrators used an increasingly economic rationale. To take these developments into account, we suggest the term \"economization\". In more general terms, we highlight that cemeteries such as Brompton can serve as an indicator of how entrepreneurial action permeated into new strata of British society.","PeriodicalId":83466,"journal":{"name":"Vierteljahrschrift fur Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69219939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, a large number of Swiss men would serve in foreign mercenary armies during the 19th and 20th centuries. This article concentrates on this group’s social structure and their motivations. The overwhelming majority originated from the lowest strata of society. They had week family ties, were poorly educated and lacked any career perspectives. Most of them when entering foreign military service were in only temporary employment as unskilled workers or even unemployed. Foreign military service, especially in the French Foreign Legion, thus was to many of them a last resort, rather than the romantic adventure it was portrayed as in contemporary movies and novels. However, soldiers’ and ex-soldiers’ perceptions of this service varied considerably. Whilst some of them simply compared it to slavery, others emphasized career opportunities, either in the military hierarchy or in their post-mercenary lives through skills acquired during their military service.","PeriodicalId":83466,"journal":{"name":"Vierteljahrschrift fur Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70636236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In consequence, West Berlin soon became dependent on West German transfer payments to balance the city’s budget. At the same time, a system of tax preferences was created to foster private investment and employment in the isolated city. The complex of subsidies was maintained and even expanded during the following decades though its negative economic effects became obvious in the second half of the 1960s. The article focuses the conceptual significance of subsidies in industrial policy as well as their factual impact on Berlin’s economic development from the early 1960s to the late 1980s, i.e. in a period of massive structural change. It comes to the conclusion that the persistence of subsidization should be explained primarily by its symbolic political value and by a lack of alternatives.","PeriodicalId":83466,"journal":{"name":"Vierteljahrschrift fur Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69219779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
