In which way and how successfully did the directorate as focal management committee use the network management instruments selection, allocation, evaluation, regulation and management of boundary spanning units? It will be shown that the two latter ones became vital for the network’s resilience, whereas selection, allocation, and evaluation had no such key position. In addition, the paper provides an analysis of internal communication, a factor that accelerated the network’s disaggregation. Ertl","doi":"10.25162/vswg-2017-0002","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.25162/vswg-2017-0002","url":null,"abstract":"The notarial registers (imbreviatura) of Jakob Haas are used in this paper to describe the land market in Bozen and its hinterland in the middle of the thirteenth century. The analysis of the transactions documented by the notary demonstrates that this property market was both complex and dynamic. Several social groups ranging from nobility to urban population and peasants were engaged in the trade of a great variety of plots (urban, agrarian, with and without farmsteads) applying different kinds of legal transaction forms (fief, sale, pledge, etc.). To further profile the mid-thirteenth-century land market in and around Bozen, a comparison is made with the conditions in the same region at the end of the same century and with Montpellier in the first half of the fourteenth century. A new approach can be given by the ‘Domkapitelsprotokolle’, the records of the chapter of the cathedral in Speyer. Aside from indications concerning the events in the course of the conspiracy, these records describe the requests of numerous villages on both banks of the Rhine asking for cash loans, the respite of the ‘Zehnt’ and the delivery of grain. These requests are directly connected with the impacts of crop failure in 1501 and 1502 and they prove the hunger crisis the groups of small peasants and rural workers were facing in those villages. Methodically, we try to connect the disruptive event itself, i. e. the distress of the common man and the partially high demands on the village communities to handle the situation, with the reactions of the cathedral chapter of Speyer and to assess it by considering in particular the ethical categories of ‘Nahrung’ (aliment) and ‘Notdurft’ (necessity) as the oldest sources of paternalistic rule.
