Through a series of plenary and breakout sessions it gave an insight into different kinds of client and different kinds of publication, as well as covering indexing software (Index-Manager) and even looking at the differences and similarities between indexing and crossword setting. New indexers were well catered for throughout the day, including with a dedicated session full of practical advice for those embarking on a new career as a book indexer. Above all, it provided a day of total immersion in all things indexing in the company of like-minded colleagues, and opportunities for the networking that is such an important part of a conference and cannot be effectively replicated in the online environment.","PeriodicalId":83061,"journal":{"name":"The indexer","volume":"34 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140082513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The history of stoplists: lists of words not indexed 词表的历史:未编入索引的词表

Weinberg","doi":"10.3828/index.2023.56","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3828/index.2023.56","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000 The concept of the stoplist – a list of the words not indexed – is related to indexable matter, to the arrangement of subentries in indexes, and to search engine optimization. Stoplists were thought to have been developed in the 1950s in conjunction with automatic indexing, but a fifteenth-century Hebrew concordance to the Bible,\u0000 Me’ir Nativ\u0000 , contains a stoplist that is very similar to modern ones, consisting of function words such as prepositions. Since the Hebrew concordance was modeled on the Latin biblical concordance of Arlottus, which does not contain a stoplist,\u0000 Me’ir Nativ\u0000 must be regarded as the first example of this structure. Although stopwords were omitted from the earliest Latin concordances (without listing them), subsequent theological debate about the meanings of Latin function words led to the compilation of special concordances of such words. Current research by the author focuses on the importance of similar small words to the Masoretes, who were concerned about preserving an accurate text of the Hebrew Bible, and may possibly have had an index of such words.\u0000","PeriodicalId":83061,"journal":{"name":"The indexer","volume":"34 20","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140084556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Improving the efficiency of managing content and automating Web content production frees up time and effort of specialised health statisticians and epidemiologists to develop new content and add value to existing content.
