{"title":"Indexing Classic Mayan, Part 1","authors":"Donald Howes","doi":"10.3828/index.2024.5","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3828/index.2024.5","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000 The Classic Mayan language was written for approximately 2,000 years, from 300\u0000 bce\u0000 until around 1700\u0000 ce\u0000 in the Colonial period, but there is a lack of information on how to index names in any ancient Mesoamerican language. This series of articles aims to remedy that situation. In order to set Classic Mayan in context, an overview of contemporaneous hieroglyphic scripts is provided, followed by an exploration of the development and use of Classic Mayan from the Late Preclassic onward. An examination of its orthography focuses on those aspects that can affect indexing, including the Maya numbering system and calendrics. A future article will consider naming conventions, marriage and kinship patterns, and examples of Late Classic period inscriptions. Finally, useful reference material for the indexer working on Maya-related manuscripts will be provided.\u0000","PeriodicalId":83061,"journal":{"name":"The indexer","volume":"59 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141268609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Springer Nature Taxonomy (SN-T) serves as the controlled vocabulary used to describe this published content. This article initially illustrates how different contexts are captured through varying abstraction levels, highlighting the interpretive nature of abstraction. Consequently it describes the structure of the SN-T and Springer Nature’s classification strategy, and motivates the varying proportion of human versus machine contribution to this process.","PeriodicalId":83061,"journal":{"name":"The indexer","volume":"12 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141271547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

She was asked to index an important medieval Tamil epic story that was both obscure and out of print. This republishing journey took two and a half years. The index had to meet the needs of several very different audiences: Tamil scholars, students comparing epic stories, and a general public just wanting to learn something about South Asian folk culture. Indexing a work of fiction poses specific indexing dilemmas. Working with a small hybrid publisher, where the author bore all of the costs of publishing, posed many more. The project was very specific, but it has implications for indexing both fiction and self-published books.","PeriodicalId":83061,"journal":{"name":"The indexer","volume":"59 15","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140085696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
