Many other cancers are under study. Therapy begins with sensitization of abnormal tissue with injection of a light absorbing photoactive medication that is inert until exposed to light of a specific wavelength which induces free-radical formation and thromboxane-2 generation, destroying intracellular organelles. Light penetration is 4 to 8 mm, so repeat therapy is often needed. It is curative for some early cancers and an important adjunct in others.","PeriodicalId":83043,"journal":{"name":"The Guthrie journal of the Donald Guthrie Foundation for Medical Research","volume":"229 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79017201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its prognosis is variable, from indolent to very aggressive. The systemic signs and symptoms of mastocytosis are diverse and related to pharmacologic manifestations of mast cell mediators. They may mimic various conditions including chronic granulomatous disorders such as tuberculosis and sarcoid, connective tissue disorders, occult visceral malignancies, and even lymphoma. We report a patient with systemic mastocytosis and review the diagnosis and management of the disorder.","PeriodicalId":83043,"journal":{"name":"The Guthrie journal of the Donald Guthrie Foundation for Medical Research","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74447014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Decreased morbidity and mortality following pancreatic surgery has improved survival in specialized centers. The purpose of this study was to review outcomes of pancreatic surgery in the context of the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of pancreatic cancer at Guthrie Cancer Center. Operative morbidity and mortality compare favorably to other centers specializing in pancreatic surgery. Early detection was accomplished in the majority of cases and low surgical morbidity enabled most patients with ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas to receive adjuvant treatment. Recent advances in the multidisciplinary treatment of pancreatic cancer patients have improved the treatment of patients with pancreatic cancer at Guthrie Cancer Center and are described in this review.","PeriodicalId":83043,"journal":{"name":"The Guthrie journal of the Donald Guthrie Foundation for Medical Research","volume":"146 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88636841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mission of the center is to accelerate scientific discovery in human biology and pathology by providing full length cDNA clones of human proteins involved in signal transduction processes. The Center provides clones of human proteins that are: 1) full length; 2) sequence verified; 3) propagated in a versatile mammalian expression vector; 4) free of extraneous 3’ and 5’ untranslated regions; and 5) available in wild-type, epitope-tagged and common mutant forms (e.g., constitutively-active or dominant negative). The clones are supplied solely for non-commercial research purposes. There is no charge for these clones, although a handling and shipping fee is assessed. Between July 1 and December 31, 2000, 490 clones were shipped to customers in 65 institutions on 3 continents and the catalogue was expanded to over 130 unique clones, at least four of which have not been previously described.","PeriodicalId":83043,"journal":{"name":"The Guthrie journal of the Donald Guthrie Foundation for Medical Research","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78154890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
