\u0000Palabras clave: coffee house, sociabilidad, espacio público, siglo xvii, Inglaterra \u0000 \u0000Abstract \u0000During the second half of the 17th Century, coffee houses proliferated in England and, far from being an exceptional phenomenon, they were fully integrated into the daily life of the country. They were public establishments that could be accessed by any man, provided he had the money to afford a cup of coffee. They became places of social interaction far from the private sphere (the home) and the sphere of authority (the court), which achieved recognition thanks to their ideals of sociability, debate and egalitarianism. The coffee houses became the reflection of the daily life of a new emerging middle class, in which empiricism and refinement began to surface. They were linked to the incipient mercantilism of the time, but also had a special impact on English politics and culture. They also received criticism, especially from the female environment, although we must consider them as an opposition to the exclusion that women suffered in order to gain access to certain public spheres. In short, the emergence of coffee houses was the creation of a new space of sociability where it is not a question of excluding any social sector and where opinions began to become public opinion. \u0000Key words: coffee house, sociability, public space, 17th Century, England

Not as obvious is the fact that these authors do not belong to the same generation: Pérez Galdós to the so-called 1868 Generation, and Buñuel to the 1927 Generation. Because of this reason, Pérez Galdós and Buñuel have different views of women and the feminist cause (avant la lettre in the case of the former). Furthermore, the Canarian was a liberal bourgeois writer, representative of the literary realism, while the Aragonese was surrealist, anti-bourgeois and Republican filmmaker. All these differences make the comparison between the literary and the cinematographic art pieces particularly interesting.

A system of local supervision by the council was combined with national supervision by a few inspectors. This paper discusses the work of the first three inspectors for secondary schools: Daniel Jan Steyn Parve, Johannes Bosscha and Winand Staring. The inspectors were to visit all secondary schools, Higher Burger Schools (hbs) and others, to become and remain well-informed about the situation of those schools. They had additionally to stimulate the growth and the quality of secondary education and they were to inform and advise the Minister. Furthermore, the inspectors had an important role in the establishment of new schools, especially the hbs. During the first decades of the existence of the hbs they exerted a large influence on the development of the organisation and teaching of this new type of school. They had outspoken ideas on pedagogy, didactics, homework and other matters of relevance in education. Their influence had probably at least as much to do with their personalities as with their formal tasks.

The school grew so fast that already in 1925 a new building on the Reynier Vinkeleskade was opened. The character of the HBS made the school not only a breeding ground for Catholic women’s emancipation, but also a place where girls could study the medical and the exact sciences. Some of them became the first female doctors and laboratory workers in Amsterdam. Initially, the school had an elitist character, but from the moment the school became a ‘lyceum’ in 1926, students from other layers of the (Catholic) population started to come to the school. With the opening of an MMS-department in 1952 the school got a new name: Fons Vitae Lyceum. The collection contains newspaper clippings, photos, official documents relating to the Higher Burger School in Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam, and some other publications. These papers tell a story of social mobility and can be read as an example of the alleged role of the Dutch Higher Burger Schools in the schooling of a generation of academics. Postma, from humble descent, was the only child of four to go to the Higher Burger School. After his graduation he matriculated the University of Amsterdam.
