He gave a history of wearing a tight turban constantly for many years. The lesion initially presented as redness of the skin, which gradually became a nodular swelling over 2 years. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed conical solid soft tissue attenuation mass. The operative findings were suspicious of neoplasm. However, the microscopic findings were typical of ischemic fasciitis, that is, a zonal pattern with central hypocellular fibrinoid necrosis surrounded by more cellular areas containing prominent proliferating neovessels and fibroblasts resembling granulation tissue. Ischemic fasciitis of the scalp is extremely rare, the present case occurred as a result of ischemia continuously exerted due to wearing a tight turban. This case highlights the importance of eliciting relevant case history and avoids histological misinterpretation of this pseudo-neoplastic lesion.</p>","PeriodicalId":82834,"journal":{"name":"Studies","volume":"111 1","pages":"651-653"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70761233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impossibility of an apocalyptic turn in theology was, somewhat ironically, initially declared by those responsible for rediscovering the eschatological-apocalyptic core of the New Testament – Johannes Weiß and Albert Schweitzer.1 There could be no going back to the ‘mythical’ worldview of apocalyptic, they reasoned; the best we could hope for was a translation of its core ideas into language more acceptable and relevant to modern ears. With the publication of Karl Barth’s commentaries on the Book of Romans, however – the first edition in 1919, the second in 1922 – what was once considered impossible soon became inevitable. Far from finding the thought of the biblical writers to be outdated and irrelevant, Barth heard in their apocalyptically-charged witness a word that was desperately needed. The First World War had shattered the illusion of unhindered progress and called a halt to the ease with which the upbuilding kingdom of God could be identified with the spread of Western Christianity and civilisation. Far from being a relic of the past, then, apocalyptic was recognised by Barth as an indispensable idiom for contemporary proclamation of the Gospel by which ‘the whole concrete world is dissolved and established’ and in which God’s ‘effective pre-eminence over all gods’ is disclosed and apprehended.2 Themes longconsidered an embarrassment to theologians – God’s conflict with anti-god powers, eschatological expectation, ‘dualistic’ thinking of various sorts – were now constituent of a movement at the forefront of Protestant theology. The apocalyptic revolution instigated by Barth has found numerous adherents: Ernst Käsemann, J. Louis Martyn, Martinus de Boer, Beverly Roberts Gaventa, and Philip Ziegler, to name but a few. It has been a point of contention whether Stanley Hauerwas belongs on such a list. ‘Some may even doubt my identity with Barth’s project’, Hauerwas notes in the introduction Review Articles: Summer 2023","PeriodicalId":82834,"journal":{"name":"Studies","volume":"112 1","pages":"247 - 258"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47383628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Commonitorium, written in the 430s, was the first sustained theological effort to establish criteria by which the true development of doctrine could be distinguished from heresy. It was hugely influential, especially for the two principles at its core: firstly, that the Church must ensure that it holds ‘that faith which has been believed everywhere, always, and by all’ (quod ubique, quod semper, quod ab omnibus creditum est – often called the Vincentian canon);4 and secondly, that development in the teachings of the Church must be an advance of established teaching (profectus), not a reversal (permutatio)5. So according to Pakaluk, the whole point of Newman’s Essay on the Development of Doctrine, as with the Commonitorium, was that ‘doctrine is given all at once in the revelation of Christ and never changes’. ‘If a simple and pious person’, he says, ‘is offered the binary choice, “Has doctrine stayed the same, or has it changed?”, the safest, best, and truest answer is that it has stayed the same.’","PeriodicalId":82834,"journal":{"name":"Studies","volume":"112 1","pages":"180 - 191"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44042789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The publication also includes a series of discourses and articles written during his tenure at the university from 1854 to 1858. In the preface Newman defines the nature and aims of a university, stressing that it is a place not so much for the advancement of knowledge through research as the diffusion of knowledge and the acquisition of wisdom through teaching and learning. He advocates a traditional curriculum including the medieval liberal arts, that is grammar, rhetoric, logic and mathematics, and he adds the sciences and theology to create a comprehensive ‘circle of knowledge’ where students of specific disciplines can benefit by ‘living among those and under those who represent the whole circle’. 1 Newman describes this wide knowledge as an ‘end in itself’ and distinct from being necessarily useful. A university education is always ‘in process’ and its primary aim is not to produce a good scholar but to foster the creation of an ‘ethical character, which the cultivated intellect will form’. 2 Newman makes it clear in his preface that he has written his Idea of a University primarily to address Catholics, and specifically Irish Catholics. He declares at the outset that while he advocates that this ‘liberal education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman’, that the gentleman that he espouses is distinctly different to ‘any narrow or fantastic type, as, for instance, that of an “English Gentleman” may be called’. 3 Newman’s ‘gentleman’ is distinct from that problematic type of gentleman he sees being groomed in the ‘English idea of a University… the production of that antiquated variety of human nature and remnant of feudalism’. 4 By tracing the distinctive contours of Newman’s gentleman we are not only able to better understand the values that inspire Newman’s ideal university, we can also appreciate how he wished to astutely position the Catholic University of","PeriodicalId":82834,"journal":{"name":"Studies","volume":"112 1","pages":"169 - 179"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49376568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After it became accepted in the 1950s that the policy of protecting infant industries had failed, there were several decades of debate about ways of replacing it. Amongst these was a linear theory of economic innovation. This is that money invested in basic research will lead to opportunities for applied research, from which new businesses, products and jobs will result. This theory suits academic scientists, who can never have enough money for research. Also, all bureaucracies are under internal pressure to grow. Their combination has saddled the country with a disproportionate and misdirected level of subsidy for science.","PeriodicalId":82834,"journal":{"name":"Studies","volume":"112 1","pages":"212 - 224"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45804962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In those years of experience, I witnessed the gradual withdrawal of any clerical presence in the school, from some four teaching Christian Brothers in 1980 to the funeral of the last one standing, who died at the age of eighty-eight in the year 2000. Those years also ushered in the gradual unavailability of clerical chaplains as local priests became ever older and busier as their numbers declined. It is important to point out at the outset that the ‘local Church’ is often far more compassionate and inclusive in its actions and statements than its institutional and universal counterpart, which is often perceived as harsh and uncaring in its strict adherence to rules and the letter of the law.1 During the period of its decline over the last thirty years, the institutional Church – thankfully just one of the models of Church as described by Avery Dulles in light of the teachings of Vatican II2 – had shown itself as particularly negligent in its duties of care to its faithful and duplicitous in its pursuance of truth and justice. More recently, Dermot Lane lamented what he called ‘the inability of Church leadership to come out with their hands up and give an account of what actually happened’, and their failure ‘to tell the truth, to do justice and to effect healing and reconciliation’.3 And sadly, all these failings were and are serious sins according to the teachings of Jesus Christ whom these people represent. In the light of these scandals and the blatant hypocrisy of those in charge, it is no great surprise that the journalist and critic Fintan O’Toole succinctly summed up the Catholic Church, which had been ‘the great guarantor of continuity over the centuries’, as ‘coming apart at the seams’4 from the 1990s onwards. This statement echoes Derek Scally’s insight into the","PeriodicalId":82834,"journal":{"name":"Studies","volume":"112 1","pages":"192 - 201"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48254496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
