Most SMA elements, with these characteristics, perform cyclic motions. In these cases, the fatigue property of SMA is one of the most important issues in view of evaluating functional characteristics of SMA elements. The fatigue properties are complex since they depend on stress, strain, temperature and their hysteresis. If an SMA is implanted with high-energy ions, the thermomechanical properties of the material may change, resulting in long fatigue life. In the present study, the nitrogen ion implantation was applied to modify the surface of a TiNi SMA tape and the influence of implantation treatment on the bending fatigue properties was investigated.","PeriodicalId":8280,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Mechanics","volume":"23 1","pages":"293-310"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2015-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68937284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Basic equations of heterogeneous orthotropic truncated conical shells are derived using Donnell–Mushtari shell theory. Employing the separation of variables and Galerkin’s method, the expressions for frequency of heterogeneous orthotropic conical shells with two mixed boundary conditions are obtained. The results are validated through numerical comparisons with available results in the literature. The influences of truncated shell characteristics, heterogeneity, material orthotropy and mixed boundary conditions on dimensionless frequency parameters are investigated.","PeriodicalId":8280,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Mechanics","volume":"67 1","pages":"331-348"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2015-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68937309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

General linear boundary conditions are considered. The Poincare method for regular perturbation problems is employed to obtain an analytical closed-form approximate solution for the temperature field. The hierarchical asymptotic problems are solved up to the second-order approximation. A numerical example is worked out, i.e., the one-dimensional heat conduction in the radial direction with prescribed temperatures at the boundaries. The approximate temperature profiles are compared with a numerical solution of the full nonlinear problem which provides the reference “exact” solution. A good agreement between the approximate and reference solutions is established. The convergence of the asymptotic series as well as the properties of the temperature field are studied.","PeriodicalId":8280,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Mechanics","volume":"67 1","pages":"233-251"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2015-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68937134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because in the original fractal theory the distribution of contact area is assumed geometrically, we propose the method in which the actual deformation of asperities and a correction due to asperity coupling (interaction) will be taken into account. This correction is equivalent to an increase of the effective separation by a quantity proportional to the nominal pressure and it has a significant effect on contact stiffness at larger normal loads (low separations). The numerical results demonstrate a nonlinear evolution of the contact stiffness with the normal load in particular in the first stage of loading at low squeezing pressures. We have compared the results of the theoretical contact stiffness using the fractal method with the experimental ultrasonic measurements. Experimental results made on real surfaces agree remarkably well with the theoretical predictions.","PeriodicalId":8280,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Mechanics","volume":"27 1","pages":"411-428"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68936195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The halfspace and the layer are both incompressible and they are in welded contact to each other. The main purpose of the paper is to establish an approximate secular equation of the wave. By using the effective boundary condition method an approximate secular equation of third-order in terms of the dimensionless thickness of the layer is derived. It is shown that this approximate secular equation has high accuracy. From it an approximate formula of third-order for the velocity of Rayleigh waves is obtained and it is a good approximation. The obtained approximate secular equation and formula for the velocity will be useful in practical applications.","PeriodicalId":8280,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Mechanics","volume":"66 1","pages":"173-184"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2014-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68936202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This new concept shows the application of fractional calculus in continuum mechanics. The advantage is that the obtained description is non-local. This natural non-locality is inherently a consequence of fractional derivative definition which is based on the interval, thus variates from the classical approach where the definition is given in a point. In the paper, the application of fractional continua to one-dimensional problem of linear elasticity under small deformation assumption is presented.","PeriodicalId":8280,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Mechanics","volume":"66 1","pages":"147-172"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2014-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68936274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The governing equations of hydrogen-natural gas mixtures are two nonlinear partial differential equations. The fluid pressure and velocity are considered as two principal dependent variables. The fluid is a homogeneous hydrogen-natural gas mixture for which the density is defined by an expression averaging the two gas densities where an adiabatic process is admitted for the two components. The problem has been solved by the nonlinear method of characteristics. By the use of Laplace’s law, the pipe’s circumferential stress has been analyzed for different hydrogen mass fraction in the mixture. It was then compared to the allowable stress of different grade pipeline steels used to transport natural gas. The obtained results have shown that the allowable stress for the natural gas pipelines is exceeded for some fractions of hydrogen in the hydrogen-natural gas mixtures.","PeriodicalId":8280,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Mechanics","volume":"66 1","pages":"269-286"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2014-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68935995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effects of nano-size of both fluid flow and nanotube are considered, simultaneously. Nonlocal beam model is used to investigate flow-induced vibration of the SWCNT while the small-size effects on the flow field are formulated through a Knudsen number ( Kn ), as a discriminant parameter. Pursuant to the viscoelastic behavior of biological soft tissues, the SWCNT is assumed to be embedded in a Kelvin–Voigt foundation. Hamilton’s principle is applied to the energy expressions to obtain the higher-order governing differential equations of motion and the corresponding higher-order boundary conditions. The differential transformation method (DTM) is employed to solve the differential equations of motion. The effects of main parameters including Kn , nonlocal parameter and mechanical behaviors of the surrounding biological medium on the vibrational properties of the SWCNT are examined.","PeriodicalId":8280,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Mechanics","volume":"66 1","pages":"217-244"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2014-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68936313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
