As the United States rose to become the leading world power in the 20 century, the main direction of transatlantic exchange reversed itself. The American idea of wilderness, at first romantically and religiously charged, found its way to Europe, as linguistic and other indicators have shown since the 1980s. The idea of the modern wolf, ecologically valuable and worthy of protection, emerged in the early postwar period, primarily in North America. The association of the two was the result of a historical coincidence; together, wolf and wilderness gained importance. In the cultural sphere of Europe, the association of wolf and wilderness was largely maintained. In the political sphere, on the other hand, various changes occurred.","PeriodicalId":82668,"journal":{"name":"Schweizerische Zeitschrift fur Geschichte. Revue suisse d'histoire. Exegesis suggested Adam before the original sin as a perfect model of masculinity, embodying the power of the spirit to master the body and sexual desires. Impotence, by contrast, was described as a defect of manhood in pastoral and penitential literature, as a lack of gender identity. The cures for impotence suggested recovering control of will upon the body in the conjugal context, through abstinence and moderate sexuality following Tobias. This biblical example, given to husbands, resembles Adam before the original sin. Its behaviour was highly recommended to the laity.","PeriodicalId":82668,"journal":{"name":"Schweizerische Zeitschrift fur Geschichte. Revue suisse d'histoire. Among others, the reform pedagogue and pacifist Elisabeth Rotten was involved in developing the conception of the Children’s Village. As a result of learning about the atrocities during World War I, Rotten got involved in various reformist movements such as the women’s movement, pacifist groups, and progressive educational circles. This article examines how Rotten linked the ideas of these movements to the conception of the Children’s Village Pestalozzi. Using Rotten’s biography as a framework, the Children’s Village is here presented as a laboratory of international understanding, aiming to prevent future wars. Lastly, the article points out how Rotten, by using her connection to UNESCO, successfully promoted the Children’s Village in Trogen as an international model for children’s homes after World War II.","PeriodicalId":82668,"journal":{"name":"Schweizerische Zeitschrift fur Geschichte. It examines the interpretations of the principle of subsidiarity underlying the measures adopted, the fiscal implications of federal policy, and asks what unintended effects the interventions caused at lower political levels and, above all, in the intercantonal network of relations. The article shows how subsidiarity is a product of social policy compromises and fiscal policy intentions. At the intercantonal level, the measures repeatedly triggered undesirable effects, each of which triggered new pressure for action at the federal level and, conse-quently, recurrent processes of interpretation with regard to subsidiarity.","PeriodicalId":82668,"journal":{"name":"Schweizerische Zeitschrift fur Geschichte. The goal of this article is to show that the quality standards resulting from the legislation processes were a product of political debates in which child protection was weighed against organizational and financial considerations. Furthermore, this article draws on a comparative perspective to illustrate the significant differences between cantons when quality standards were implemented. Central to this was not only federalism, but also the concept of subsidiarity as a mode of statehood – meaning that the lowest possible level should be activated for a task – which resulted in a complex division of responsibility regarding control and financing between the different governmental and private actors.","PeriodicalId":82668,"journal":{"name":"Schweizerische Zeitschrift fur Geschichte.
