Pucinski ran for the Chicago City Council in 1973, after his defeat for a seat in the United States Senate that year. He served as alderman until 1991. During those years, Chicago politics went through a transformation that saw the old political system begin to disintegrate and a new one emerge. Pucinski played a key role in these events. He played the part of both an ethnic politician and an ethnic community leader, serving as president of the Polish American Congress-Illinois Division for many years and as one of the most important spokesmen for Chicago Polonia. Once again, this era was a transformative one for the Polish community as it saw its political power begin to decline in the city.","PeriodicalId":82333,"journal":{"name":"Polish American studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41885577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently president of the Polish Museum of America in Chicago, Richard Owsiany has been active in the Polish American community for his entire adult life, including working as Roman Pucinski's chief legislative analyst in the Chicago City Council from 1983 to 1991. In this interview, he provides his insights into what it was like to work with Pucincki, the nebulous world of Chicago politics, and the priorities and achievements that made Pucincki so successful.","PeriodicalId":82333,"journal":{"name":"Polish American studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44759074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Known as the “Sunshine Lady,” she engaged her audience in various social, political, and charitable endeavors promoting Polishness and supporting both Poles and Polish Americans. Among others, they funded a bomber during World War II and welcomed refugees admitted to the United States under provisions of the Displaced Persons Act, adopted thanks to the efforts of the Polish American Congress. From the 1950s, she was deeply involved in promoting the political career of her son, Roman Pucinski. According to the 1910 census, there were 13,515,886 foreign-born residents, accounting for 14.7 percent of the population. Among the two largest nationality groups, Italians and Poles, 51.3 percent of the former and 45.8 percent of the latter lacked any English-language skills on arrival. When the United States entered the war in 1917, the lack of functional English among a large proportion of the population posed a major problem for those eligible for conscription into the US armed forces. How could the hundreds of thousands of potential recruits be effectively trained when so many barely understood basic English, if at all? This article chronicles the efforts of Stanisław Antoni Gutowski, a Polish immigrant from Grajewo in the Łomża Voivodeship in northeastern Poland, who successfully developed a comprehensive and effective training program that not only prepared people for service in the armed forces but also for obtaining citizenship and the English skills they would need to open doors to opportunity in civilian life.","PeriodicalId":82333,"journal":{"name":"Polish American studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46340405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
