The Russian intervention has been a topic of global discussion ever since, raising several international legal issues. The wide range of issues arising under international law, although distinct, are intertwined. Ukraine has already brought this matter before Ukrainian national courts alleging war crimes and the International Court of Justice alleging genocide. But the inevitable violation of human rights arising out of large-scale casualties has not been an issue of discussion before either forum. This article analyses the implications of such intervention broadly under international human rights law. The significance of this article lies in exploring the nuances associated with these legal issues through a viewpoint methodology with a critical approach, which could help national, regional, and international actors understand the interconnectedness among these issues, and act expeditiously to effectively address the crisis having geo-political impacts.","PeriodicalId":81668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of international affairs","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44460351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of how they make a living, their responsibilities and limitations in a society, and their special dietary and health needs, especially during pregnancy, women in Bangladesh are largely affected by the adverse impacts of climate change. In this regard, targeted climate change policy actions could play a vital role in mitigating women’s vulnerability amid global climate change. Accordingly, gender-sensitive climate change policies are required in Bangladesh to address this problem. Considering the scenario, this study will provide an overview of the significant climate change policies of Bangladesh. The study aims to ascertain whether Bangladesh’s climate change policies pragmatically address gender concerns. Critical climate interventions are also evaluated to see if gender is taken into account in the operational activities. This research applies the qualitative method, including the desk study and textual analysis approach. The study employs both primary and secondary data to analyse gender sensitivity in the climate change policies of Bangladesh. The findings demonstrate that there are very few gender-sensitive climate change policies in Bangladesh. While superficially acknowledging that women are more vulnerable than men, climate change policies often lack action plans to address the above-mentioned issue.","PeriodicalId":81668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of international affairs","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49597195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Except for the use of neo-functionalist integration strategies in the BIMSTEC integration scheme, previous literature examined BIMSTEC from multiple perspectives. This research aims to analyse the integrative potentials of BIMSTEC by evaluating the structural and perceptual conditions of the integration scheme. This is a case study on BIMSTEC consisting of qualitative and quantitative data extracted from secondary (literature review and the BIMSTEC website) and primary (expert interviews) sources. According to the paper, the structural and perceptual conditions of BIMSTEC are favourable for the functioning of the process mechanisms. The research contributes by proposing a new type of structural condition (level of supranational governance structure) essential for integration strategies to work in collaborative schemes like BIMSTEC. The paper concludes by recommending the establishment of an elite supra-nationalist network to enhance the level of supranational governance and strengthen the role of BIMSTEC in the Asian integration process, a route to the Asian Union in the future.","PeriodicalId":81668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of international affairs","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41633515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though the condition of the migrants at their destination is well discussed in the literature, there is little focus on their condition at the origin. In this context, the present study aims to analyze the impacts of the pandemic on the economic, social and psychosocial well-being of Bangladeshi migrants and their families at the origin to identify the weaknesses of the existing migration governance of the country which have contributed to perpetuating their sufferings. The study found that the returnee migrants and their households faced multifaceted negative impacts of the pandemic. Involuntary return of their migrant members and their stranded conditions, lack of employment and reduced remittance flow severely curtailed the income of migrant households, added to their debt burden and led to the curtailment of necessary expenditures. Migrants faced stigmatization and discrimination at both their destination and origin. Social stigma and involuntary repatriation had psychosocial impacts on them. The Government of Bangladesh took various initiatives to assist the migrants in coping with the challenges though they were not adequate. The present study suggests focusing on undocumented migration, “failed migration,” and reintegration to make the existing migration governance more prepared for similar future challenges.","PeriodicalId":81668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of international affairs","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43665235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Globally known as the ‘Rohingya Crisis’, the crux of the problem lies in the citizenship issue of the Rohingyas, who underwent an exodus from their homeland in successive waves and took shelter mostly in neighbouring Bangladesh to escape reported inhuman atrocities committed to them by the Myanmar military junta. While the international community has initiated several peaceful diplomatic means to resolve the crisis, the fact remains that such efforts have yielded no positive result. This is because the core solution to the problem centres around one very perplexing issue—granting citizenship to the Rohingyas. This political strategy is expected to open the portal for the Rohingyas, refuged now in Bangladesh, to return to Myanmar. The issue of Rohingyas’ citizenship is, however, intricated by legal, political and historical narratives by Myanmar authorities, many of which are illusive and without historical veracity. The study, thus, has attempted to unravel how and in what ways the Rohingyas have been deprived of the recognition of an indigenous race of Myanmar and finally deprived of their citizenship rights. The paper argues that politico-historic and legal arguments are in favour of the Rohingyas’ citizenship and that the ground reality should break through the recalcitrance and stubbornness of Myanmar’s current regime.","PeriodicalId":81668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of international affairs","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46806451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to 'open border' and multidimensional inter-linkages, migration for work persists to this day. The importance and challenges of the labour market for Nepali migrants in India are yet to be recognized and studied. This study examines the existing skill endowments of Nepali migrant workers and strategies to enhance their labour market outcomes in India. The Indian labour market is fragile. Recruitment neither follows a strict rule or process nor are any specific skills required. From this standpoint, the situation of Nepali migrant workers is not much different than India’s internal migrants. However, Nepali migrants are neither well documented nor properly recruited in the labour markets of India. Because of their low level of education and lack of skill, they are deprived of good job opportunities and their income is also low. Most of the Nepali migrants are not netted in by the social security scheme of India. This study suggests that education; training for skills and social security benefits can go a long way in improving the labour market outcomes of the Nepali migrants.","PeriodicalId":81668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of international affairs","volume":"3 1","pages":"103-118"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3126/joia.v3i1.29087","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44389959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, states began to search for a new model that would not only promote and expand trade but would also contribute to world peace. Since the 1980s there has been an increase in regional cooperative projects all over the world. The concept of regional cooperation revolves around the idea that states in a shared geographical space cooperate with each other in order to achieve goals that go beyond the capacity of individual national attainment. Regional cooperation eventually found its place in South Asia. As a result, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was established in 1985 and the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement came into force in 2006. Despite these mechanisms, regional cooperation remained relatively low. Both economic and non-economic factors are responsible for this situation. Factors that range from tariff and non-tariff barriers to physical connectivity to asymmetric power relations and security concerns have served as obstacles to achieve regional cooperation in South Asia. In order to overcome these barriers, South Asian states must maintain flexibility in dealing with highly political issues in order to make way for regional growth and economic development.","PeriodicalId":81668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of international affairs","volume":"3 1","pages":"42-51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3126/joia.v3i1.29081","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45277321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Primarily an economic move, BRI has its roots in infrastructure building around the less developed parts of the world in an attempt to increase connectivity and collaboration for trade among and between these states with all of them connected to Beijing. While BRI promises massive economic returns through connectivity, the question of environmental sustainability hangs in a balance. The situation is graver still for a country like Nepal that has been struggling for politico-economic as well as social stability. The dilemma discussed here is not only unique to Nepal, but reverberates through many developing and economically challenged nations around the world. The complexity of the situation becomes apparent not only because of environmental threats that loom large over the country, owing to mega infrastructure projects, but the lack of political as well as economic measures that need to be in place in order to assuage and counter the eminent threats through proper steps. All this requires further elaboration on how the Nepalese infrastructure sector and the BRI development model promise to address environmental sustainability. Nepal’s already constrained economy hangs in the dilemma following its decision to join the initiative.","PeriodicalId":81668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of international affairs","volume":"3 1","pages":"145-161"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3126/joia.v3i1.29091","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45281768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And, the Nepali civil society has come out strongly against the newly published political maps of India, prepared a new map of Nepal, showing the whole of the territory east of Mahakali River (about 400 sq. km) as Nepalese land on the basis of Treaty of Sugauli signed in 1816 by East India Company of Great Britain and Raja of Nepal. An analysis of the maps, so far available, shows that changes have been made in the names of the river and places, and there is cartographic aggression and manipulation by India in relation to Mahakali River and its boundary with Nepal’s northwest. It has also been found that Nepal has published a map in the past showing its international boundary without any basis of the treaties and other historical documents. Analysis clearly shows that the river originating from Limpiyadhura is the Mahakali (called Kalee/Kali River) as per Article 5 of the Sugauli treaty and it forms the international boundary between the two countries.","PeriodicalId":81668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of international affairs","volume":"3 1","pages":"1-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3126/joia.v3i1.29077","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46208751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
