Changes in the nature of hiring and the status of workers in platform capitalist companies reflect general employment trends. At the same time, the work of hundreds of thousands of workers in this segment is poorly studied, and explanations of its nature are mainly theoretical. This article is based on an analysis of an array of diary entries by Russian social ethnographer Andrey Starovoitenko, who worked for several months in the distribution center of one of the leading Russian marketplaces. The article is part of a column devoted to the analysis of materials from an ethnographic study of labor in the marketplace. The article draws attention to the role of anonymized marketplace spaces in the desubjectivization of workers who feel like a simple continuation of a complex digitalized socio-technical system. The text talks about the place of digital surveillance and control and the role of special equipment in integrating unskilled personnel into the complex algorithmic system of the marketplace. Separately, the issue of desubjectivization of marketplace workers and the limitations of professional socialization is considered. The conclusion is made about the place of precarious wage labor in e-commerce, taking into account the desire to transfer unskilled labor into the state of digital day laborers deprived of contractual relations with the company. To reveal the main plots, the Amazon research by A. Delfanti, the theoretical resources of Roth's neo-Marxist interpretations of the labor sphere, Z. Bauman's concepts of light capitalism, and selected theses of the actor-network theory are involved. In addition, the article refers to examples of social criticism of labor in the factories of platform capitalism, reflected in modern cinema.","PeriodicalId":81563,"journal":{"name":"Inter-Nord","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89119021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A lot of research is dedicated to the transformation of labor relations within platform economy, including precarity and “uberization” of labor, as well as digital technology-mediated surveillance and control over employees during working hours. At the other “pole” are numerous studies on the informal (“garage”) economy. This article is based on a 1.5-month ethnography I conducted in the summer of 2021 in the warehouse complex of a prominent Russian marketplace. Engaging in a dialogue with both “poles” mentioned, my observations in the warehouse suggest the simultaneous coexistence of two realities. The first deals with various forms of digital control of employees, ranging from access to the workspace to the regulation of output and eventual earnings. The second is predominantly informal and is based on the deliberate restriction of workers' access to “rare” resources (“work”) and information (“details”). Here I attempt to show the complex, at times conflicting interaction of formal and informal components of warehouse labor, combining the neo-Marxist conceptual apparatus with the metaphor of C. Geertz's “bazaar economy”.","PeriodicalId":81563,"journal":{"name":"Inter-Nord","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82940994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to systematize the variety of research approaches and assessments of interested persons authors used the methods of source analysis and generalization (grouping) of assessments and analogies in relation to the objects and phenomena under consideration.The practical part of the study consisted in the formation of an array of data and a bank of cases in the field of grassroots initiatives to improve the urban environment and the formation of public spaces. Based on the data obtained, there was created a map of the activity of urban communities, as well as a heat map, illustrating the foci of concentration of the social capital of the city. As the analytical tools authors used models of joint actions and cooperation, research methods of the theory of public goods and behavioral economics, as well as the method of geoinformation analysis.As a unifying term for the phenomena under consideration, the authors propose the term “initiative improving”, meaning a spontaneously emerging and developing form of civic activity at the place of residence using self-organization and self-financing tools. The range of revealed facts of initiative landscaping varies from negatively perceived ‘local community art’ (a form of naive and artisanal improvement of the space around a residential building) to initiatives of residents to restore and form public facilities approved by the majority (restoration of entrances of historical buildings, lost historical elements, green spaces). Intermediate forms in this regard are initiatives within the framework of territorial public self-government, festive events and temporary facilities. The concept that allows us to describe the most constructive format is M. Lydon's “tactical urbanism” — the theory of “small affairs” in the field of urban development.The novelty of the presented approach consists in the systematization of the facts of initiative improvement (including negative ones) and their integration into the general logic of modern urban development against the background of currently prevailing approaches based on the allocation of the decisive role of professionals and experts in this process.","PeriodicalId":81563,"journal":{"name":"Inter-Nord","volume":"41 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81352120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The existing configuration of labor relations is heterogeneous and contradictory. There are zones where legal, prescribed by law relations prevail. There is an informal sector where employers make their own rules, and there are labor relations with lower standards reserved for “second class” workers such as migrants. Finally, the digital sector is actively developing, where “pseudo-labor relations” are being formed. All this pushes to search for new ways of development and to try to determine the parameters of the so-called “new labor contract”. Most often, the idea of liberalizing labor legislation and freeing businesses from “excessive restrictions” that increase labor costs is considered as such. The article cites a number of facts showing that the flip side of liberalization is a high level of conflict, turning into protests. At the same time, the practices of resolving conflicts in the labor sphere are mainly reduced to suppressing the dissatisfaction of workers or ignoring their position.Another option, which is actively developing in large corporations, is the use of paternalistic strategies, which, although they look humane, are aimed only at supporting behaviors that are beneficial to companies. Their peculiarity is that they exclude the possibility of employees to defend interests that do not coincide with those supported by business.","PeriodicalId":81563,"journal":{"name":"Inter-Nord","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81063760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
