The functioning of committees at all levels of circuit organisation ensured that a large stock of written material was built up by each Methodist circuit, and fortunately a good deal of this has survived. Social divisions between the Methodist sects are exemplified in the copperplate hand of the Wesleyan Superintendent and the sometimes bizarre spelling of the Primitive, struggling with the written word before education became even nominally compulsory. Class books record the sects' dedicated members; marriage and baptism registers the progress of families. Annual reports on the state of the circuit are especially useful for comparisons over time, since they consist of a standard form of questions to be answered each year, and request comments and explanations on fluctuations in income or sudden defections of members. These reports, and the minute books of quarterly meetings, chapel trustees and circuit committees, provide an enormous amount of information about the organisation and fortunes of the Methodist sects, about individuals active within them, and about secular conditions and circumstances which shaped the lives of the congregation. Many local Methodist records are held by their respective Methodist circuits, although some may be found in County Record Offices and libraries. Nationally, the Methodist Archives and Research Centre (which moves from London to the John Rylands Library in Manchester in I 977) holds complete sets of Conference Minutes, a collection of preachers' letters, marriage registers, some records of local circuits, and publications such as the Primitive Methodist Magazine. In my own area, south Warwickshire, where I have been investigating Methodist records for evidence of links with the National Agricultural Labourers' Union, only one out of five circuits has deposited all its records in a public library (the Stratford circuit, held at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Library).
