Previous scholarship has emphasised the pseudoscientific claims made by Ahnenerbe scholars and the racist motivations behind the fieldwork, yet the casts and other documentation from these early expeditions have not been analysed in detail. At Comana, Türkiye, the Covid-19 pandemic created an opportunity to adopt a slower, more deliberate pace of investigation. Here, the author reflects on how practices adopted during this period promoted a deeper engagement with ritual landscapes through embodied interaction with the land and local community. Despite this transformation, legacies of green heritage—or the traditional agricultural landscapes that supported them—can still be detected within contemporary cityscapes. Here, the authors identify examples of green heritage within the 3000-year-old city of Zadar on Croatia’s Adriatic coast. Based on formal comparisons, laboratory analysis and 3D modelling, the authors argue that the iconography links this vessel to the cult of the god Sabazios, the private worship of whom may have spread from the nearby city of Emporiae.
