Different gravity data processing techniques including horizontal gradient of vertical derivative coupled with upward continuation and Euler’s de-convolution are used. These methods revealed a number of lineaments describing gravity density discontinuities whose directions are N-S, NE-SW, ENE-WSW, and WNW-ESE at NNW-SSE. However, the predominant direction for major lineaments is WNW-ESE. The major lineaments associated to the faults are: F1, F2, F3, F6, F7, F8, F9, F10, F14, F21, F22, F23, F24 and F28. Euler’s solutions indicate depths up to 9.2 km for the anomaly sources. Such lineaments are very useful for groundwater and oil exploration, but also for risk assessment.

About 90% of Egyptian territories is a desert with little amount of rainfall. In these arid deserts, groundwater is the only possible source that would support cultivation and civil expansions. Several Oases including Kharga are distributed in the western desert of Egypt, in which the groundwater is the main source of irrigation and daily life. The New-Valley governorate is keen on reclaiming the western desert and developing new urban areas. Previously available boreholes and geological information are used to preliminary evaluate the three dimensional (3D) subsurface structures including the reservoir water and its environment. \u0000In this study we utilize magnetotelluric (MT) recordings to spot more light on the Nubian aquifer of the Kharga Oasis. A 3D-MT inversion is applied using “w3dinvmt” code. The resultant 3D-resistivity indicates a low resistive layer associated with a Quaternary aquifer and extends from the surface down to a depth more than 50 m. Low to moderate resistivity values are found to indicate a deep Cretaceous aquifer defined at depths from 250 m to 500 m. A resistive zone is found to exist between them that can be associated with solidified limestone and phosphate layers. Furthermore, a high resistivity value appears to belong to the basement complex of Precambrian rocks in the Oasis. A constructed 3D-model is well matching with major hydro-geological structure of the Kharga Oasis that has been inferred from previous works.

Limestone and marble are one of the principal raw materials for industrial rocks such as cement manufacture. In Nigeria, Limestone occurs in the sedimentary environment of Benue Trough, Sokoto, Dahomey and Borno (Chad) basins. This Limestone forming environments (shallow coastal marine conditions) appears to have re-occurred several times in the geological history of the basins. The deposits of the Benue trough appear to contain the most economically viable mineral resources including limestone in Nigeria. Nearly all the limestone deposits in the trough are used for industrial purposes such as cement. The Calabar Flank is one the main carbonate province in Nigerian Benue trough. Ibeto Cement Company obtained permit to explore the viability of limestone deposit in some parts of the Calabar flank area for the establishment of a Portland cement production plant. This research evaluated the presence and volumetric analysis of limestone occurrence recovered from core drilling holes in the area on Exploration Licenses (ELs) No. 17373 and part of No. 17374. Prior to subsurface core drilling investigation, surface reconnaissance survey was undertaken. Rockworks 16 software complimented with dilute Hydrochloric acid were used for this evaluation.

Dissolution was measured progressive periods of time under different temperature ranges. The main objective of this paper was to evaluate the individual and collective effect of time and temperature on the dissolution trends for any facies. The method applied was the surface response method, in which, temperature, and time represented the factors, while amounts of calcium and magnesium released (in ppm) represented the responses. Dissolution was carried out experimentally under a constant pH of 0.1 m Hcl, continuous stirring. The resulting data in terms of concentration (ppm) of the Ca and Mg was used as input data for the model. Response surface method provided models for the dissolution of carbonates, optimization of dissolution, and individual-and-combined effect of each factor (Time and temp).

In this study, up to date earthquake catalogue and aeromagnetic data of the area under study were analyzed for tracing active subsurface faults that are responsible of earthquakes activity. Using 2D-power spectrum techniques, depth of structures (faults) was estimated and a shallow intrusion was detected at 550 m. The tectonic framework of SW-Cairo was evaluated and discussed in view of seismicity, surface geology, subsurface structures from RTP maps and boreholes information and the active faults were traced at shallow and deep depths.

Fresh samples were randomly chipped out of the outcrops in-situ at about 50-100 m distance except where there is outcrop exposure of special interest. A base Map projection of Nigeria, Map Grid:- Datum: WGS-84, 1984 (NAD-83); Zone: 32 (UTM-32 Northern hemisphere) was used in all work undertaken for this Mineral Resource evaluation. Drilling was planned and set-out using the local grid at 1 km along strike and 200 m dip wise. Recovered core log were sequentially boxed into core boxes, lithologically assayed and tape measurements of litho strata imported into Rockworks 16 software environment for interpretation.

These \u0000 nodules, which consist of two hemispheres separated by a median disc, are composed essentially of micro-quartz \u0000 associated with calcite of extra-polymeric substance (EPS) type, clay minerals, organic carbon and oxides and \u0000 sulphides of iron. They contain tubular microfossils, pluricellular clusters, microorganisms and vesicles, and have \u0000 undergone considerable deformation by mutual lateral compression in tabular beds. They were interpreted as biogenic \u0000 nodules hosting microorganisms. \u0000We provide the following additional supporting evidence: Akouemma nodules exhibit internal fibro-radial fabrics \u0000 initially composed of fibres and carbon particles; the initially well-organized structures are decaying and are in particles \u0000 and fragments that are dispersed in the undeformed siliceous mass. These internal fabrics are strongly highlighted \u0000 by Al- K- (Ti)-rich clay minerals that are often in close association with fibres and carbon particles. They had likely a \u0000 vegetative reproduction by duplication. \u0000We infer that the Akouemma nodules are macrofossils of sessile soft-plastic body organisms. These macrofossils, \u0000 recently dated at 2.2 Ga, are designated “Akouemma hemisphaeria” and bring a new vision to the “large colonial \u0000 organisms” found in the Franceville Basin.

These deformation structures include folded layers, convoluted layers, ball-and-pillow structures, recumbent lamination, waterescape structures, and small-scale landslide. Combining the assessments of depositional facies, potential triggers, paleoenvironmental context, we conclude that the probable trigger agents of this deformation were earthquakes, slides, and debris flows. The seismically-induced soft-sediment deformation structures provide new substantial evidence for the existence of active tectonics and paleo-earthquakes in the Batang area since the Holocene.

These faults follow the old trends of the rift-related structures predominating in the Upper Rhine Graben (URG), which originated during Late Eocene-Miocene time. Linear and horizontal measurements were performed by using the Cerescope device and interpreted, applying the Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) Technique. Linear EMRprofiles were helpful for mapping active faults, while the main horizontal stress (σH, N to NNE) was easily identified with EMR-horizontal measurements. Reactivation of rift-related structures of the Upper Rhine Graben at Landau area produces a new system of active shallow fractures following old trends, and has been detected through the present study by Cerescope applying the EMR-Technique. The present results imply that the Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) to the south of Landau has a great impact on reactivation of the pre-existing rift-related faults by mechanical hydro-fracturing occurring within the reservoir rocks underneath the area.
