A recent court ruling over a case of injection-needlestick-injury induced CRPS has touched off serious debates among both medical practitioners and legal professionals. Although the court rejected the plaintiff's claims, the high court admitted them in view of the evidence and the entire pleadings and ordered the defendant to pay compensation. As venipuncture is the most frequently conducted and minimally invasive procedure in daily clinical practice, this court decision has attracted tremendous interest throughout the nation, alarming medical practitioners, and encouraging attorneys. The purpose of this article is twofold: to highlight the patient's clinical course in summary based on an unofficial case law report and to provide a scientific perspective on this issue based on recent relevant articles.</p>","PeriodicalId":80280,"journal":{"name":"Hand surgery : an international journal devoted to hand and upper limb surgery and related research : journal of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand","volume":"19 2","pages":"151-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1142/S0218810414400012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"32378851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The modified Brunelli procedure is a soft tissue procedure that recreates the stabilising forces of the SL ligament using a split flexor carpi radialis tendon graft passed from volar to dorsal via a tunnel in the distal pole of the scaphoid. Thirteen consecutive patients with an average age of 35 years underwent the modified Brunelli procedure. Pain improved from a mean visual analog score of eight preoperatively to 1.5. The DASH score improved from a preoperative score of 55.4 to 34.9 as did the grip strength from 40% to 75% respectively. All wrist ranges of motion were decreased post-operatively in particular wrist flexion. SL ligament reconstruction using the modified Brunelli procedure resulted in satisfactory outcomes. Post-operatively patients were relatively pain free, with improved grip strength. The range of motion was reduced postoperatively, however did not restrict return to work or premorbid activities. </p>","PeriodicalId":80280,"journal":{"name":"Hand surgery : an international journal devoted to hand and upper limb surgery and related research : journal of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand","volume":"19 1","pages":"39-42"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1142/S0218810414500075","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"32185719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
