{"title":"The well-being and mental health of male and female hospital doctors in Germany.","authors":"Stefanie Mache, Burghard F Klapp, David A Groneberg","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

This study focuses on the associations between subjective well-being and mental health. In addition, gender differences are evaluated. The research was conducted as a cross-sectional online survey using a standardized questionnaire to assess physicians' mental health and well-being. Results have shown moderate scores for mental health and well-being in physicians. In general, male physicians perceive a better well-being and higher mental health score than female physicians. Well-being and mental health should be improved to increase physicians' work ability and subsequently, the quality of treatment and patient satisfaction. Mental health prevention should be more widely implemented in hospitals, and its awareness and early treatment should be encouraged. Mental health interventions might include modifying physicians' daily work schedules, providing curricula on mental health and offering training on the awareness of distress and well-being.
","PeriodicalId":80252,"journal":{"name":"World hospitals and health services : the official journal of the International Hospital Federation","volume":"50 4","pages":"17-22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"33188193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"National infection prevention and control programmes: Endorsing quality of care.","authors":"Valeska Stempliuk, Pilar Ramon-Pardo, Reynaldo Holder","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Core components Health care-associated infections (HAIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. In addition to pain and suffering, HAIs increase the cost of health care and generates indirect costs from loss of productivity for patients and society as a whole. Since 2005, the Pan American Health Organization has provided support to countries for the assessment of their capacities in infection prevention and control (IPC). More than 130 hospitals in 18 countries were found to have poor IPC programmes. However, in the midst of many competing health priorities, IPC programmes are not high on the agenda of ministries of health, and the sustainability of national programmes is not viewed as a key point in making health care systems more consistent and trustworthy. Comprehensive IPC programmes will enable countries to reduce the mobility, mortality and cost of HAIs and improve quality of care. This paper addresses the relevance of national infection prevention and control (NIPC) programmes in promoting, supporting and reinforcing IPC interventions at the level of hospitals. A strong commitment from national health authorities in support of national IPC programmes is crucial to obtaining a steady decrease of HAIs, lowering health costs due to HAIs and ensuring safer care.
","PeriodicalId":80252,"journal":{"name":"World hospitals and health services : the official journal of the International Hospital Federation","volume":"50 2","pages":"4-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"34118478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Planning strategies for nosocomial infection control.","authors":"Giuseppe Lacanna","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

According to the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 99,000 deaths per year in the United States are caused or impacted on by multiple hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), which are roughly estimated to be around 1.7 million cases. In Europe, there are 25,000 deaths per year from the same cause, 17.000 of which are linked to nosocomial infections. Patient safety is a core issue in today's health care settings. There is a growing consensus, supported by scientific investigation, that the role of the built environment is central towards minimizing and controlling the level of such infections. The contribution of architectural solutions and planning choices becomes crucial at this stage. This paper outlines the most common measures to adopt at the architectural and planning level, to combat HAI, focusing on the most critical areas of the hospital: wards, intensive care units and operating theatres.
","PeriodicalId":80252,"journal":{"name":"World hospitals and health services : the official journal of the International Hospital Federation","volume":"50 2","pages":"14-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"34118480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How can emerging disinfection technologies gain a foothold in the current culture of hospitals? 新兴的消毒技术如何在当前的医院文化中立足?

{"title":"How can emerging disinfection technologies gain a foothold in the current culture of hospitals?","authors":"David St Clair","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

In the United States, more than 90% of hospitals still use only the traditional \"spray and wipe\" disinfection methods initiated over a century ago to protect patients from their environment; international adoption of new methods is even lower. Innovative approaches like whole room disinfection find an inhospitable reception in spite of clearly superior reductions in health care-acquired infections. Much of the resistance is due to a lack of true accountability for patient safety in hospital organizations and to perverse incentive structures in historical reimbursement policies. But all of that may change in the coming years as hospitals and doctors become more responsible for the health outcomes of their patients.
","PeriodicalId":80252,"journal":{"name":"World hospitals and health services : the official journal of the International Hospital Federation","volume":"50 2","pages":"20-2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"34118903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Australia - Consumers Health Forum of Australia: Enabling health service consumers to have an active role throughout the health system.","authors":"","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Patients are recognized as active consumers within the Australian health care system which is a universal health care system funded nationally, with state-level responsibility and local delivery. Patient engagement with hospitals is therefore focused on making services more patient-centred. As a national body representing the views of patients in Australia the Consumers Health Forum (CHF) helps affiliates to improve local and regional engagement. Initially, engagement was driven by local relationships with administrators and clinicians, whereas now there is more systematic patient representation on committees and boards - although local involvement can still be a challenge. The key to health services in Turkey: new perspectives on leadership and hospital management. 土耳其保健服务的关键:关于领导和医院管理的新观点。

{"title":"The key to health services in Turkey: new perspectives on leadership and hospital management.","authors":"Alper A Sahin","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Health services are one of the most important criteria for making a country function. Turkey has mobilized all of its resources to provide high-quality, easily accessible and patient-friendly services for its population. To achieve this aim, the Turkish health care system has been undergoing a significant transformation through its Health Transformation Programme begun in 2005. The reforms focus on the introduction of a general health insurance system, changing hospital health services, improvements in hospital management and transformational leadership skills. Firstly, all state-run hospitals in the country were merged under the same umbrella, giving millions of people covered by the national security agency access to all of these hospitals. Secondly, all drugs and medical equipment used by patients were made free of charge. Thanks to these developments, hospitals were modernized, and this modernization process in the health sector is still continuing swiftly. On the other hand, for Turkish hospitals to survive, they need to modernize further and become closer to European models, and produce new leaders with new paradigms. In this new and changing health system, hospital leaders and executive officers should be visionaries and strategists advising when to change direction. Following this doctrine, most Turkish hospitals are now run by two top executives: the hospital manager and the chief executive officer who is in charge of business functions. These executives should clearly be the leaders of high-quality, health care organizations.
","PeriodicalId":80252,"journal":{"name":"World hospitals and health services : the official journal of the International Hospital Federation","volume":"50 1","pages":"7-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"32429802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
