It was occasionally associated with a loss of nociception in the mouth too. A specific pattern of sensory loss or alteration is imperative to understand and predict the modality of the infection. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed, which included 252 participants of all age groups and communities. A questionnaire was circulated on social media through the means of a Google Form. Consent was obtained before posing the participants with questions. Results: The sensory loss was found to be the most prevalent in people with mild symptoms. About 65.2% of the participants showed a partial or a total loss in olfaction and 59.5% of them showed a loss in one or more tastes. About 44% of the participants showed a partial or a total loss of nociception. All of the altered sensations came back to normalcy after 2 weeks of the loss of sensation in the majority of the population. Besides the other symptoms, 15.5% of the participants experienced altered mental alertness. Conclusion: SARS-CoV-2 infection was found to affect the olfaction, gustation, and nociception in the oral cavity (spice sensation). Mental alertness was also found to be altered in a small fraction of the population affected with SARS-CoV-2.","PeriodicalId":8012,"journal":{"name":"APIK Journal of Internal Medicine","volume":"11 1","pages":"92 - 96"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45267868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In women; cancer of the breast is the second most common cancer after cervical cancer and the second leading cancer's death following lung cancer among women in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Nigeria, it has become the most common female malignancy with a prevalence of 12.5%. However, the same treatment that offers better cure rates may also result in a serious decrease in quality of life, psychological problems, as well as provoking changes in their bodies. Societal behavior towards breast cancer patients makes a woman that is newly diagnosed with breast cancer become tearful, ashamed, and discouraged. Aims: To examine breast cancer, body image and the roles of the male partner. Methods: The data for this review paper are from published studies. Electronic databases of Medline, Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar were searched using the keywords: breast cancer, body image, roles of the male partner and literature were retrieved and screened for eligibility. The date limit considered in the literature search was from 2016-2021 to capture only the variables identified in this seminar objective. The author defined the topic of interest and the goal was to address the objective of the seminar topic. Results: Four themes (issues) emerged which are: (1) The Model of Whole-Person Caring, (2) Disturbed Body Image, (3) Psycho-Social Impact of Breast Cancer and (4) Roles of the Male Partner. Conclusion: Breast cancer poses a significant financial and psychosocial burden not only on patients, but also on their spouses, families, and broader social network. Breast cancer disease usually changes spousal roles as the women's husbands take over their responsibilities. The disease influenced both partners and made stress a common factor shared by them. Husband plays a vital role in the lives of breast cancer patients through managing the finance, decision-making, providing emotional support, and remaining involved throughout the disease. Therefore, involving the husband in planned psycho-social interventions produces better results than merely patient-focused strategies. Male partners have a great role to play and should be encouraged and allow partaking in the treatment process of their spouses as this will positively influence their recovery.","PeriodicalId":8012,"journal":{"name":"APIK Journal of Internal Medicine","volume":"11 1","pages":"65 - 69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48506147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, we aimed to determine the patterns of in-hospital morbidity and mortality in patients admitted for diabetes. Methods: A prospective multicenter analysis of the causes of hospital admission and death among patients with type 2 diabetes who were admitted from diabetic clinic and emergency units over a 3-month period in selected tertiary hospitals in southwest, Nigeria was conducted. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS version 21.0. Results: A total of 341 patients with diabetes were admitted with a mean age of 59.6 ± 15.6 years and overall mortality of 14 deaths (4.4%). Almost three-fifths (59.5%) were previously known patients with diabetes with a mean duration of 52.44 ± 30.02 months. Two hundred and thirty-one (70.9%) patients were admitted through the emergency units and others through outpatient clinics. The duration of hospital stay ranged from 1 to 135 days, with a mean duration of 24.5 ± 14.7 days. The diabetes-related indications for admission were hyperglycemic crisis (diabetes ketoacidosis [DKA] and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state [HHS]) (59.8%), diabetic foot ulcer [DFU], (11.7%), hypoglycemia (7.6%), and infections (7.3%). Among the diabetes-related diagnoses, 100%, 77.8%, 50.0%, 41.7%, and 28.3% of patients with chronic kidney disease, stroke, DFU, DKA, and HHS respectively stayed longer than 10 days on admission. Conclusion: Diabetes still contributes high cause of morbidity in our hospitals but with a reduced mortality compared to previously reported figure. Hence, continued emphasis on early diagnosis with improvements in diabetes care will help to improve diabetes outcomes.","PeriodicalId":8012,"journal":{"name":"APIK Journal of Internal Medicine","volume":"11 1","pages":"76 - 81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47870338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The virus predominantly affects the respiratory system. However, the continued study of the disease since the beginning of this pandemic has evolved our understanding of COVID-19 which showed varied presentations with multisystem involvement, leading to acute myocardial infarction, stroke, pulmonary embolism due to its prothrombotic nature as well as acute kidney injury (AKI). Objectives: (1) To determine the incidence of AKI in COVID-19 (2) To correlate AKI with the outcome of the COVID-19 patients. Materials and Methods: The present study involves 200 patients who were suffering from COVID-19 admitted to a hospital in Bengaluru during the period of June 2020–May 2021, fulfilling the inclusion criteria were analyzed and appropriate data were collected after obtaining informed consent. Results: Majority of the subjects belonged to >50 years of age group. Among the recruited subjects, 117 (58.5%) were male and 83 (41.5%) were female, 170 patients were discharged and 30 patients died. The mean urea levels were 37.82 ± 23.68 mg/dl and mean creatinine values were 0.95 ± 0.85 mg/dl. The urea levels among the COVID-19 patients who were discharged was 35.98 ± 20.27 mg/dl and among those who died was 52.22 ± 38.01 mg/dl, respectively, and this was statistically significant (P = 0.00). The creatinine levels were 0.88 ± 0.44 mg/dl and 1.32 ± 1.76 mg/dl among the COVID-19 patients who got discharged and expired, respectively, and this too was statistically significant (P = 0.00). Conclusion: The patients suffering from COVID-19 who had developed AKI at the time of presentation had a poor prognosis as well as increased risk of mortality.","PeriodicalId":8012,"journal":{"name":"APIK Journal of Internal Medicine","volume":"11 1","pages":"88 - 91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45611778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These presentations are due to direct invasion of the tissues by the virus or other factors such as immune response to the virus. These sequelae affect the patient's quality of life implicating the importance of follow-up care in all coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients and changing the definition of “post-COVID-19 recovery.” Adequate preparedness for post-COVID consequences with adequate health care is need of the hour. This also warrants for the patients' awareness, stressing upon the importance of educating the general public about keeping a watch for certain symptoms. Regular screening procedures may also aid in timely prevention, recognition, and management hence reducing morbidity and mortality in the post-COVID phase.","PeriodicalId":8012,"journal":{"name":"APIK Journal of Internal Medicine","volume":"11 1","pages":"70 - 75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44551255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
