Data acquisition rates of the order of kHz transform process monitoring, providing unprecedented information of high statistical value. Ultrasound is complementary to other measurement modalities, probing the elastic and thermal properties of materials. In the absence of air bubbles, ultrasound travels through concentrated systems of particles, providing information about size, compressibility, structure, distribution, chemical and phase state. It is safe, can be non-invasive and can be economical. The combination of these fields involves the incorporation of genes into polymeric matrices that can be injected or implanted to promote tissue regeneration. As a consequence, there is an increasing number of pharmaceutical companies using human absorption studies to provide a ‘route map’ for development. These projects are typically undertaken early in clinical development and utilize engineering-based capsules to provide non-invasive drug delivery to the selected sites of the human gut.
