This study was aimed at observing curcumin’s effects on the histopathological progression and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels in collageninduced arthritis (CIA). Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats (150+50 g) were divided into five random groups. A group was assigned as the normal control (CTRL), while the remaining were subcutaneously immunised with 150 μg of collagen emulsion on day 0. CTRL and CIA-Curcumin-d0 groups were supplemented daily with olive oil (1 ml/kg) and curcumin (110 mg/ml/kg) from day 0, respectively. The CIA-OV (negative control), CIA-Beta and CIA-Curcumin-d14 groups were given daily supplementation of olive oil (1 ml/kg), Betamethasone (0.5 mg/ml/kg), and curcumin (110 mg/ml/kg) from day 14, respectively. The daily oral supplementations continued until day 42. The study showed that CIA-Beta (**P<0.05) and CIACurcumin- d0 (**P=0.01) groups had significantly lower mean histological scores compared to CIA-OV, respectively. Serum IL-1β levels for CIA-Beta and CIACurcumin- d0 were not significantly raised on day 42 as to compared to day 0, and the mean increment of IL-1β levels from day 0 to day 42 were significantly lower (**P≤0.01) for all the CIA groups compared to CIA-OV. There was no significant difference in both mean histological scores and IL-1β levels of CIA-Curcumin-d0 compared to CIA-Beta. Early supplementation of curcumin could potentially minimise disease progression of CIA in rats.","PeriodicalId":80079,"journal":{"name":"Medicine & health","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42236125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main aim of this study was to assess how common patients with T2DM skipped meals. Its associations with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, HbA1c, eating out of home and binge eating were examined too. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015 among 203 patients at a public healthcare clinic in Kuala Lumpur. A self-administered questionnaire including the Malay-version Binge Eating Scale was used. The proportions of participants who frequently skipped meals and ate out of home were 41.4% and 61.6%, respectively. Only 2% of them had binge eating disorder. Multiple logistic regression showed only Chinese was significantly associated with frequent meal skipping compared to Malay (adjusted odds ratio: 0.36; 95% confidence interval: 0.16-0.77; p value= 0.009) after controlling for age, employment status, educational status, HbA1c, presence of complication, type of treatment, eating out of home and binge eating. In conclusion, meal skipping was a frequently practised eating behaviour. Eating out of home was common too, but binge eating was rare. Meal skipping was not influenced by both eating practices and it had insignificant associations with glycaemic control. Cultural and religious factors may play an important role in defining their eating practice. Further studies are needed to assess the safety and acceptability of this practice, but clinically, its effects must be individually examined to prevent unwanted consequences on their health.","PeriodicalId":80079,"journal":{"name":"Medicine & health","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44539141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the COVID-19 related knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) and its psychological impact, such as anxiety and depressive symptoms in Malaysia population. A crosssectional online survey was conducted from 8th to 22nd April 2020, involving 227 respondents. The set of questionnaire included sociodemographic characteristics, the KAP questionnaire – 11 items on knowledge (K1-K11), 3 items on attitude (A1- A3), 4 items on practice (P1-P4), together with Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) Scale. To evaluate the data, descriptive analysis, Chi-square test and item response theory analysis were implemented. The percentage of respondents who answered the true statements items from Knowledge component (K1-K3) correctly was almost 100%. However, that of items testing on COVID-19 myths (K4-K11) ranged from 38.8% to 95.2%. The only item from Attitude component which had less than 95% being answered correctly was A1 (78.9%), regarding face masks usage. From the Practice component, over 80% of respondents identified that they used social media to obtain updates on COVID-19 all the time. This is alarming as most of the information circulating on social media have not been verified by relevant authorities, which might lead to, and continuously reinforce anxiety-inducing myths. This study showed that lower overall KAP scores, particularly for Knowledge component items, are related to higher anxiety levels and more depressive symptoms.","PeriodicalId":80079,"journal":{"name":"Medicine & health","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85953940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Malaysia has witnessed the deployment of several types of autocidal ovitraps, which includes the Mosquito Larvae Trapping Device (MLTD) introduced by Kuala Lumpur City Hall. This study aimed to assess Aedes larval abundance and local meteorological variables in a university residence, in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. MLTD (n=30) baited with organic NPK fertiliser (5:5:5) solutions were deployed. Larvae collection and trap servicing were performed weekly for a duration of eight weeks. Rearing and species identification for larvae were conducted in the laboratory. Out of 2,152 Aedes larvae, 85% of them were Ae. albopictus whilst the remaining were Ae. aegypti. Outdoor collection of Ae. albopictus surpassed its indoor collection (mean larvae per trap of 9.28 versus 6.08). Conversely, an indoor collection of Ae. aegypti was greater than its outdoor collection (mean larvae per trap of 1.72 versus 0.86). The highest ovitrap indices were observed in Week 5 and 6 which were 90% and 93%, respectively. Week 1 had the lowest ovitrap index, 30%. Our analyses revealed a positive correlation between Aedes larval abundance and maximum temperature (r=0.830, p=0.011) whereas minimum relative humidity was shown to have a negative correlation (r=-0.778, p=0.023), with the larval abundance. Routine monitoring of dengue vectors at its immature stages can provide information on the density and fluctuation of the local mosquito population. Coupled with concurrent meteorological variables, it can guide vector control operations as part of dengue prevention strategies.","PeriodicalId":80079,"journal":{"name":"Medicine & health","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48460321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cranial suture has long been studied for its age-related closure. However, until now, forensic anthropologists still attempt to investigate the best way of estimating age at death from cranial suture closure because skull is usually found at the crime scene due to its easy recognised-appearance and persistence to post-mortem insults. For these reasons, a study of age estimation from cranial suture closure in a Thai population was conducted, which focussed to study the appearance and visibility of facial suture closure using computed tomography (CT). CT image series of 140 cases were obtained in order to investigate ectocranial closure of the selected facial sutures. The results from CT image analysis revealed that nasomaxillary provided the most consistent examination of suture closure (52%) while frontonasal delivered the lowest consistency in suture closure examination (29%). The inconsistency mostly occurred in assigning the closure score of 1 and 2. Thus, it could be suggested that a 3-scale scoring system of closure: open, closing, and closed, could be an appropriate method of evaluating degree of ectocranial closure of facial sutures obtained from CT imaging. This fundamental information of facial suture closure from CT images could serve as a starting point on development of age estimation technique from suture closure by utilising CT images.","PeriodicalId":80079,"journal":{"name":"Medicine & health","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43542843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We aimed to determine the histological variants and molecular subtypes of medulloblastomas by immunohistochemistry in our population, and to correlate that with clinicopathological parameters. Seventeen patients aged four-month to 14.3 years diagnosed with medulloblastoma were recruited from year 2002 to 2017. All medulloblastomas were assigned to various histological variants and molecular subgroups by immunohistochemistry surrogate markers (YAP-1 and beta catenin). They were then correlated with clinicopathological parameters and outcomes. Classic histology (76.5%) was the commonest, followed by large cell/anaplastic (LCA) (17.6%) and desmoplastic/nodular (DN) variants (59%). The most frequent molecular subgroup was non-SHH/WNT tumours (64.7%), seconded by SHH tumours (35.3%). Among the SHH tumours, 66.7% was classic histology and the remaining 33.3% was LCA variant. Interestingly, one DN histology demonstrated YAP-1 and beta catenin immunonegativity, denoting non-SHH/WNT molecular subgroup. Majority (88.2%) medulloblastomas were at midline 4th ventricle location, including DN variant. Estimated three-year diseasefree- survival (DFS) and overall-survival (OS) was 60% and 86.7%, respectively. Age <3 years at diagnosis, tumour size >5 cm, LCA histology and high risk group were inversely correlated with DFS, with early relapse. Infant <3-year-old had worse OS. Other factors had no significant impact on DFS and OS. We had demonstrated the feasibility of simple immunohistochemistry-based surrogate markers (YAP-1 and beta catenin) to stratify medulloblastomas into distinct molecular subtypes. Prognostic and predictive values of YAP-1 immunomarker in medulloblastomas however await further investigations.","PeriodicalId":80079,"journal":{"name":"Medicine & health","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42042335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study was to investigate the association between corneal diameter as measured from the white-to-white distance and natural lens diameter in children. This association may aid intraocular lens selection following cataract removal in infants and young children. A cross-sectional study was performed on forty eyes from 40 children less than 4 years, who needed to be examined, were planned for a procedure or operation under general anaesthesia. Subjects were recruited from Eye Clinic,Kuala Lumpur General Hospital from January 2010 to September 2011. Corneal diameter was measured with Holladay-Godwin corneal gauge while lens diameter was measured with ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM) during surgery. For the results, mean age of subjects was 24.7 + 12.1 months. Mean corneal diameter was 11.62 + 0.50 mm horizontally and 11.20 + 0.58 mm vertically. Mean horizontal lens diameter was 7.94 + 0.47 mm. A medium positive correlation was found between mean horizontal corneal diameter and lens diameter (r=0.479, p=0.002). Lens diameter had a strong correlation with patient’s age (r=0.718, p<0.001). Lens diameter can be calculated by using this model of equation: [Lens diameter (mm) = 7.010 + 0.021 Corneal Diameter (mm) + 0.028 Age (months)] (r2=0.52). In conclusion, there was a moderate positive correlation between corneal and lens diameter. UBM can be used to measure lens capsular bag size directly preoperatively.","PeriodicalId":80079,"journal":{"name":"Medicine & health","volume":"51 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83207621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
