There is a growing body of evidence, that the overall health risks of HT exceed the benefits. Making one's own informed choice has become a central concern for menopausal women. The Internet is an important source of health information, but the quality is often dubious. The study focused on the analysis of basic criteria such as last modification date and quality of the HT information content. The results of the Women's Health Initiative Study (WHI) were used as a benchmark.

Methods: We searched for relevant Web pages by entering a combination of key words (9 x 13 = 117) into the search engine www.google.de. Each Web page was analysed using a standardized questionnaire. The basic criteria and the quality of content on each Web page were separately categorized by two evaluators. Disagreements were resolved by discussion.

Main findings: Of the 97 websites identified, basic criteria were not met by the majority. For example, the modification date was displayed by only 23 (23.7%) Web pages. The quality of content of most Web pages regarding HT was inaccurate and incomplete. Whilst only nine (9.3%) took up a balanced position, 66 (68%) recommended HT without any restrictions. In 22 cases the recommendation was indistinct and none of the sites refused HT. With regard to basic criteria, there was no difference between HT-recommending Web pages and sites with balanced position.

Conclusion: Evidence-based information resulting from the WHI trial was insufficiently represented on gynaecologists' Web pages. Because of the growing number of consumers looking online for health information, the danger of obtaining harmful information has to be minimized. Web pages of gynaecologists do not appear to be recommendable for women because they do not provide recent evidence-based findings about HT.
","PeriodicalId":80069,"journal":{"name":"Medical informatics and the Internet in medicine","volume":"29 3-4","pages":"211-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14639230400005958","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24984567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients receiving treatment in palliative home healthcare is geographically separated from the caregivers making symptom control a challenge, a challenge that could be met by the use of information and communication technology. Technologies of today offer different ways for patients to assess their symptoms at home and send the assessments to the healthcare provider. Examples are the use of a PC, a touch-tone telephone, and a digital pen, which require different kinds of infrastructure in the patient's home, and which differ in strengths and weaknesses. As part of an ongoing quality assurance work within the hospital-based home care clinic at Linköping University Hospital, the project has designed, developed and implemented an IT-support system for pain assessments for patients at home using digital pen and mobile Internet technology. A questionnaire study indicated that pain assessment using digital pens was accepted by patients and that problems mainly arose from the use of the visual-analogue scale.
","PeriodicalId":80069,"journal":{"name":"Medical informatics and the Internet in medicine","volume":"29 3-4","pages":"199-210"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14639230400005966","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24984662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on a model of the pedagogical elements contained in educational websites, the authors developed a short objective scoring system with five criteria. Pre-university students were used to find websites in plastic surgery. One hundred and fifty of those that were still in place after a year were evaluated using the objective scoring system. Sixty of these were then selected and were subjectively evaluated by final year medical students in terms of their perceived educational potential. There was only a moderate correlation between the objective and subjective scores. Our conclusion is that it does not seem possible to construct any objective system of medical website evaluation. The discussion of the results of this study focuses on the issues involved in finding suitable web-based material and the diversity between students. New strategies such as formally organized consortia involving agreements between medical schools may evolve.
","PeriodicalId":80069,"journal":{"name":"Medical informatics and the Internet in medicine","volume":"29 3-4","pages":"185-97"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14639230400005982","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24984663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, with incorrect dose treatment it can profoundly damage patients' inner ear and kidney. The dosage of medication and the dosage interval will affect serum concentration that results therapeutic or damage. Pharmacokinetics is the study of managing the relationship between the dosage medication, dosing interval, and serum concentration. However, due to the complicated mathematical equations of pharmacokinetics, it is rarely used in clinics. The purpose of this study was to use a pharmacokinetics model to build a prototype of gentamicin CDSS embedded in a PDA. This system was implemented in a district teaching hospital in Chiayi area, Taiwan. Empirical data was collected under routine clinical setting with real patients and physicians to validate this CDSS. The research results showed that, considering the therapeutic effect, the pharmacokinetics-based CDSS outperforms physicians' experience. Regarding the intoxication, the pharmacokinetics-based CDSS also performed better than physicians' experience with less intoxication. The physicians using the system revealed a high degree of agreement with the perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and intention to use the pharmacokinetics-based CDSS.
","PeriodicalId":80069,"journal":{"name":"Medical informatics and the Internet in medicine","volume":"29 3-4","pages":"239-51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14639230400009158","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24984571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to estimate the discriminating power of different identifiers susceptible to be used in a record linkage process. This work showed the interest of three identifiers when linking data concerning a same patient using an automatic procedure based on the method proposed by Jaro; the date of birth, the first and the last names seemed to be the more appropriate identifiers. Including a poorly discriminating identifier like gender did not improve the results. Moreover, adding a second christian name, often missing, increased linkage errors. On the contrary, it seemed that using a phonetic treatment adapted to the French language could improve the results of linkage in comparison to the Soundex. However, whatever, the method used it seems necessary to improve the quality of identifier collection as it could greatly influence linkage results.","PeriodicalId":80069,"journal":{"name":"Medical informatics and the Internet in medicine","volume":"29 3-4","pages":"221-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14639230400005974","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24984665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the benefits of CPR systems were evaluated to determine their contribution to enhancing the quality of medical care and hospital management.

Methods: Data were collected by a questionnaire survey mailed out to participants.

Results: The per-bed mean cost for implementation was 14,308 dollars (range: 3538-38,077 dollars). The mean annual maintenance cost for the CPR system was 457,615 dollars (range: 39,769-2,307,692 dollars). The multivariate analysis (Hayashi's Quantification Type I) revealed high partial correlation coefficients between implementation cost and the CPR system maker. In addition, the multiple correlation coefficient for four factors (CPR system maker, number of servers, institution type and implementation date) in predicting implementation cost was 0.798. Over 60% of respondents replied that their satisfaction with the CPR system was 'very high' or 'high.' Eighty-two percent of the hospitals responded positively that CPR systems improve the quality of medical care, and 70% felt that the systems help prevent medical errors.

Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the maker of CPR system, number of servers, institution type and implementation date had a strong influence on per-bed implementation costs in that order. There are always at least two contexts involved in the use of such systems: the expert knowledge-provider context and the end-user context. To show this, we present examples of context-dependent aspects significant to the use of decision-support systems. The existence of discrepancies between the contexts threatens to disrupt the rationale for using decision-support systems: for the system to transfer knowledge from the expert to the end-user. Both theoretical and empirical studies show that such discrepancies exist and that they may be detrimental to the use of decision-support systems.
