{"title":"Measurement of transference interpretations.","authors":"K P Bøgwald,&nbsp;P Høglend,&nbsp;O Sørbye","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The authors present a cost-efficient process rating scale for detailed measurement of how much transference interpretations and related therapist interventions are used in brief dynamic psychotherapy. Theoretical and methodological considerations on how to operationalize and quantify such therapeutic interventions are discussed. The scale had highly satisfactory interrater reliability for three raters, who rated 60 whole sessions from an ongoing randomized study of two manualized forms of brief dynamic psychotherapy. In one treatment group, moderate emphasis on transference analysis was intended. In the other, minor or no use of the studied component was intended. The two treatment groups differed significantly in the use of transference interpretations and related interventions. There was no significant difference in therapists' general therapeutic skill or use of supportive interventions. In healthy individuals, these developmental stages can engender the highest human qualities, including altruism, creativity, and intuitive wisdom. For persons lacking healthy ego development, however, such experiences can lead to psychosis. Superficially, transpersonal states look similar to psychosis. However, transpersonal theory can assist clinicians in discriminating between these two conditions, thereby optimizing treatment. {"title":"Emotional control theory and the concept of defense: A teaching document.","authors":"M Horowitz, H Znoj","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Defensiveness in intrapsychic and interpersonal activities is a generally accepted concept among psychodynamic theorists, but a theoretically grounded classification of emotional control processes is needed. As a result of intensive case-by-case clinical and empirical studies, such a system was assembled. The system is organized by three major categories of processes that can regulate emotions. These are sets of mental operations that control 1) content of thought and communications, 2) form of thought and communications, and 3) person schemas that organize beliefs and interpersonal expressions. Each category of defensive control processes is linked to observable outcomes at intrapsychic and interpersonal levels. {"title":"Interpersonal change in brief supportive psychotherapy.","authors":"R N Rosenthal, J C Muran, H Pinsker, D Hellerstein, A Winston","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>As a substudy of a manual-based outcome study of the Beth Israel Brief Psychotherapy Program, the authors studied the efficacy of supportive psychotherapy in personality change, with particular attention to changes that outlast the period of treatment. They examined results from the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP) at intake, 40th-session termination, and 6-month follow-up in the first 20 subjects randomized to the supportive group. Eight subjects (40%) dropped out, but their initial IIP scores did not differ from those of follow-up completers. Six of 10 subjects with complete 6-month follow-up data showed significant improvement in interpersonal problems (4 cases P < 0.001; 2 cases P < 0.05).
