The label, definition and cluster of defining characteristics according to cluster of defining characteristics according to Townsend (1990) are the starting point, the related factors are left out of consideration. The validation mentioned above was carried out in accordance with the Delphi-method, that consisted of three Delphi rounds. A panel of experts was asked particularly to compile defining characteristics that are relevant for 'social isolation' and to indicate the critical defining characteristics. This procedure generated a cluster of seven defining characteristics for 'social isolation' of which the content validity turned out to be considerably increased with regard to the cluster formulated by Townsend. The distinction between critical defining characteristics and supporting defining characteristics was not clarified by this study.</p>","PeriodicalId":79427,"journal":{"name":"Verpleegkunde","volume":"9 2","pages":"91-102"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19080450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first phase of the study an inventory was carried out of pain word descriptors used by hospitalized Dutch children. In the second phase, these word descriptors were given an intensity value on the 10 cm scale by 355 children. An alpha reliability coefficient of 0.83 supported instrument homogeneity. Factor analysis (N - 355) was used to investigate construct validity. A three-factor solution was carried out to evaluate the validity of the three dimensions of pain. Factor 1 consisted of items in the affective and evaluative domains and factors 2 and 3 items from the sensory domain. Ultimately a two-factor solution provided the most intelligible conceptual pattern with the least loss of information. In this study literature stands for documents which are being used in nursing practice. The analysis of these documents points out that the Dutch practical nursing terminology is very heterogeneous. Concepts related to nursing diagnosis and nursing problems are used in many different ways. The arrangement of nursing terminology in general and of nursing diagnosis or nursing problems in particular, shows many dissimilarities. Indications for known classifications are small in number. There is a prodigious conceptual confusion. Community health care and mental health care show interesting efforts concerning classification, acute hospital care however only in a limited way. Community health care seems more advanced in establishing and systematizing nursing data. The results of this literature research indicate a large similarity with the results gathered at the other parts of the National Pilot Research in Nursing Terminology.
