{"title":"Providing care to a culturally diverse community: a mobile academic nursing center.","authors":"W R Spurlock, E Knighton, S C Brown, R Conner","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Health care institutions are increasingly collaborating with nursing education programs to provide quality and cost-effective primary health care services to the community. Mobile academic nursing centers are emerging as viable alternative sites for these services because they can provide immediate access to health care services and circumvent logistical problems in access to care. Although not a new concept, their development as an integral component of the nursing academic unit is being reexamined in light of health care reform and nursing's role in this reformation. Unlike stationary clinics, these \"clinics on wheels\" provide multisite access to diverse populations and communities. This article describes how a mobile academic nurse managed center can provide nurses and students with opportunities to develop competencies in community-based experiences.
","PeriodicalId":79376,"journal":{"name":"Seminars for nurse managers","volume":"7 4","pages":"183-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21846462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Mergers and acquisitions in professional organizations: a complex adaptive systems approach.","authors":"M E Walls, R R McDaniel","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Nurse managers face unique challenges as they cope with mergers and acquisitions among health care organizations. These challenges can be better understood if it is recognized that health care institutions are professional organizations and that the transformations required are extremely difficult. These difficulties are caused, in part, by the institutionalized nature of professional organizations, and this nature is explicated. Professional organizations are stubborn. They are repositories of expertise and values that are societal in origin and difficult to change. When professional organizations are understood as complex adaptive systems, complexity theory offers insight that provide strategies for managing mergers and acquisitions that may not be apparent when more traditional conceptualizations of professional organizations are used. Specific managerial techniques consistent with both the institutionalized characteristics and the complex adaptive systems characteristics of professional organizations are offered to nurse managers.
","PeriodicalId":79376,"journal":{"name":"Seminars for nurse managers","volume":"7 3","pages":"117-24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21637250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
