To date, nine such practitioners have been assessed as competent to practise independently and in their first three and a half years of practice have transferred 366 critically ill children. Potential obstacles included: limitations to prescribing, resistance to nurses performing a traditional medical role and adaptation in the paediatric intensive care unit environment. Effectiveness of OSCEs as learning, teaching and assessment strategies in preparing for practice was assessed by questionnaire. The results were positive among both groups. Although these techniques are not so well established in Japan there is growing interest in them. The authors conducted a survey and found that children's nurses in Japan appreciated the value of distraction techniques and play therapy.
