Shape stimuli that elicited different responses of the IT neurons, were found to result in different response variances. The response variance vs. mean response relationship of the IT neurons could be described by an analogous function to those found in previous studies of A17 in cats and of V1 in macaques. A comparison of the stimulus discrimination capacities of the individual neurons revealed that neurons which exhibit lower variances can discriminate their preferred and non-preferred shape stimuli more reliably than neurons with higher variances.</p>","PeriodicalId":79356,"journal":{"name":"Neurobiology (Budapest, Hungary)","volume":"7 2","pages":"93-102"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21448875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After removal of the cerebellum and pons, the hypothalamus and remaining parts of the brain were examined. Histamine was assayed radioenzymatically; indoles and catechols by HPLC with electrochemical detection; spermidine and spermine by HPLC with fluorometry. MAO-A and MAO-B activities were estimated with radioassays employing serotonin and beta-phenylethylamine, respectively and specific inhibitors, clorgyline and deprenyl. Long-term portocaval shunt did not significantly alter cerebral catecholamines, serotonin, spermidine or spermine concentrations. However, brain histamine and 5-hydroxyindoleactic acid were significantly raised. Of the MAO enzymes only MAO-B activity was elevated (ca. 25%, p < 0.05) in the hypothalamus but not in the rest of the brain. The kinetic measurements suggest an adaptive change in MAO-B protein synthesis. The data suggest changes evoked by portocaval shunt in brain amine systems are permanent and there are species differences in MAO enzymes' response to higher substrate supply.</p>","PeriodicalId":79356,"journal":{"name":"Neurobiology (Budapest, Hungary)","volume":"7 4","pages":"413-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21738813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the time interval 10-30 min after LGPC administration (85 mg/kg i.m.), the amplitude of the PERG increased significantly. In both monkeys the amplitude enhancement was more pronounced for low spatial frequency stimuli (1 cycle/degree) than for medium spatial frequency gratings (5 cycles/degree). This result suggests that besides the general facilitatory properties, LGPC may have specific spatial frequency tuning effects at the level of retinal information processing.</p>","PeriodicalId":79356,"journal":{"name":"Neurobiology (Budapest, Hungary)","volume":"7 4","pages":"407-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21738812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The amount of substance P released by electrical stimulation has been found to be dependent on the number of pulses and chemically elicited substance P release also proved to be dose-dependent. Our findings reinforce previous data that resiniferatoxin is approximately 100 times more potent than capsaicin and the potency ratio between piperine and capsaicin is 1/50.</p>","PeriodicalId":79356,"journal":{"name":"Neurobiology (Budapest, Hungary)","volume":"7 4","pages":"437-44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21738816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Selegiline, an (-)-isomer, is the more potent monoamine oxidase B enzyme inhibitor, and this substance is used in the therapy of Parkinson's disease. The neuroprotective and neuronal rescue effects of deprenyl, as well as the psychostimulant action of its metabolites, methamphetamine and amphetamine are also different for the enantiomers. In this study the biotransformation of deprenyl enantiomers was compared. Stereoselective dealkylation of both optical isomers was found as major metabolic alteration.
