The absolute necessity of this routine for every woman is being questioned more and more. The article describes techniques that a woman and her birth attendant might use during the antepartum and intrapartum periods to avoid the need for an episiotomy. Prenatal factors include finding a willing birth attendant, improving nutritional status, maintaining healthy vaginal mucosa, incorporating the Kegel exercise into a daily exercise program, and implementing perineal massage. Intrapartum factors include the use of intelligent positioning for pushing and pushing only as the parturient is inclined.","PeriodicalId":79224,"journal":{"name":"Issues in health care of women","volume":"2 3-4","pages":"105-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/07399338009515554","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17958477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Encompassed by this body experience in pregnancy are the perceptual and attitudinal dimensions of body image and the kinesthetic experience associated with body schema. Although it is the woman's body that undergoes the physical alterations of pregnancy, recent evidence indicates that the body experience is shared by the woman and her partner. Through a review of the research and other literature, this article focuses on the body experience of the pregnant woman, her partner, and the aspects of this experience shared by the couple. Findings from the literature are used to discuss implications for nursing practice in family‐centered maternity care.","PeriodicalId":79224,"journal":{"name":"Issues in health care of women","volume":"2 3-4","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/07399338009515547","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17958476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
