Report No. 450.","authors":"H J Alfandre","doi":"10.21236/ad0636509","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21236/ad0636509","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract : In order to evaluate the predisposing factors, the results, and possible sequelae of aerotitis media as encountered among submarine recruits during their physical qualification for submarine training, 432 such candidates were studied as they underwent pressurization in a dry-cylinder tank. Among these men, 156, or 36.2 per cent, developed aerotitis following pressurization. Upper-respiratory infection was shown to predispose a man to development of aerotitis; also predisposing were the inability to insufflate the middle ear, and the presence of nasal allergies. The presence of adenoidal tissue and/or dental malocclusion did not appear directly related.
