Increased pial thickness and fibrous proliferation from the pia mater into the underlying neural tissue accompanied the neoplasm. No attachment of this growth to either the arachnoid or the dura mater could be discerned at any site examined. The vitreous chamber was filled with a subretinal neoplastic mass, which consisted histologically of a mixture of glial cells, nerve cells, nerve fibers, and cells resembling ependyma with some cartilage, bone, and bone marrow. The tumor was diagnosed as a ganglioglioma, a neoplasm which occurs occasionally in human brains and very rarely in human eyes. This is the first report of such a tumor in an animal other than man and the 5th report of it in an intraocular location. Meningeal tumors were observed to occur as early as 20 days after inoculation. Meningeal tumors from calves killed 90 and 145 days after inoculation extended into the brain along the course of blood vessels. Metastasis, however, was not observed. Alle drei Tiere waren zwischen 2 1/2 und 3 1/2 Monate alt und lebten in einer Höhe von über 2800 m, in einer Gegend, in welcher Jodmangel besteht. Alle drei Tiere zeigten ausserdem Hypertrophie des rechten Ventrikels, erstes Stadium der “Brisket Disease”. Two types were identified-1 a typical granulosa tumor, the other having a Sertoli pattern. The 13 granulosa tumors occurred in adult animals, 2 of which exhibited nymphomania. Nine of the 13 had metastasized by the time of discovery. The Sertoli type of tumor also occurred in adult animals. Estrinizing effects were more common in these, as the endometrium had varying degrees of hyperplasia or thickening in 7 instances, and 1 animal had persistent estrus. None had spread beyond the ovary. The Sertoli type was thought to be more closely related to granulosa tumors than arrhenoblastomas because it was associated with estrinizing rather than virilizing effect, all of them lacked Leydig cells, some had overlapping microscopic patterns with granulosa tumors. and a Sertoli arrangement could be identified that was similar to areas in early graafian follicles and atretic follicles. The serum concentration of immunoreactive insulin in a dog with beta-cell carcinoma was increased compared to normal dogs. Metastases in the liver and lymph nodes remained functionally active and were responsive to tolbutamide following excision of the primary neoplasm. The cells comprising functional islet-cell neoplasms had ultrastructural and histochemical characteristics of beta cells. At the level of ultrastructure the neoplastic cells had definitive evidence of secretory activity and the organelles concerned with protein synthesis were well developed.
