Loew shows us that the formation of the genre of cinematic technological dystopia was internally driven by innovations in special effects as much as by the narratives of screenwriters, and that German film trick pioneers gave shape to the field from the very beginning. More than a history of a single facet of the German cinema industry, Loew’s book reveals the wide-ranging impact of material practices that shaped the forms of wonder that we continue to experience in our technologically mediated world.","PeriodicalId":78454,"journal":{"name":"MLN bulletin","volume":"29 1","pages":"608 - 612"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89046684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Leon Battista Alberti’s influential 1450 treatise made a distinction between the manual labor of the carpenter and the intellectual labor of the architect, emphasizing the “sure and wonderful reason and method” and the “knowledge of all the highest and most noble disciplines” by which the architect “knows both how to devise through his own mind and energy, and to realize by construction, whatever can be most beautifully fitted out for the noble needs of man” (5). Francesco di Giorgio Martini and Pietro Cataneo similarly noted the “good judgment” (giudizio), “ingenuity” (ingegno, Cataneo 185), “subtle imagination” (sottile immaginazione), and “reason” (raciocinazio, Martini 36-7) required to create “a single, harmonious work” (Alberti 23).1 The well-ordered building, according to early modern formulations of architecture, was one in which the highest speculative abilities had been exercised, assuring “the most handsome and effective position, order, and number” (313) of each component of the design and the rigorous observation of the principles of proportion, decorum, and symmetry.","PeriodicalId":78454,"journal":{"name":"MLN bulletin","volume":"5 1","pages":"239 - 259"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86122024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
