(Shih Balady, family Asteraceae), is a medicinal plant that grows in the desert, commonly used as tea by population in Egypt Sinai and of Saudi Arabia. The present study aims to evaluate antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of aerial parts of A. judaica collected from the inland desert (Wadi Hagoul) of Egypt. Total phenolics, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins were measured in the plant of interest. According to the reduction of DPPH the anti-oxidant activity was measured. Different extracts of A. judaica were screened for their antimicrobial activity against nine pathogenic microorganisms using filter paper disc assay. The secondary metabolites of A. judaica were examined and proved that it was rich in tannins and phenolics (13.29 and 7.62 mg/g dw). The IC 50 values of A. judaica extract was 1.78 mg.ml -1 compared to standard catechol (0.15 mg.ml -1 ). In the present study, the extracts of A. judaica showed unusual activity depending on the type of bacteria and fungi. Also, ethyl acetate and methyl alcohol extracts showed considerable broad spectrum (77.78%, each) against both bacteria and fungi, followed by acetone, then methylene chloride and petroleum ether extracts. This study showed that A. judaica extracts could be used as antimicrobial substances in pharmaceutical and food preservation systems.","PeriodicalId":78355,"journal":{"name":"Journal of experimental medical sciences","volume":"49 1","pages":"04-08"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1970-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80748019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were recorded on grain yield and other agronomic traits. Observations showed difference in half-sib families for studied traits. Among the 64 half-sib families, minimum days to 50% tasseling (51 d) were observed for HS-49 while maximum (57 d) for HS-63. Minimum days to 50% silking (56 d) were counted for HS-6 while maximum (63 d) for HS-23. Minimum days to 50% anthesis (55 d) were counted for HS-1 and HS-6 while maximum (62 d) for HS-23. Similarly, minimum ASI (-2 d) were observed in HS-1, HS-15, HS-16, HS-28 and HS-63 while maximum (2 d) in HS-48. Minimum (60 cm) ear height was recorded for HS-11 and maximum (93.5 cm) for HS-28. Minimum fresh ear weight (1.3 kg) was weighted for HS-17 while maximum (3.2 kg) for HS-21. Grain moisture was recorded minimum (19.35 %) for HS-19 and maximum (31.25%) for HS-2. HS-42 showed minimum (28 g) 100 kernel weight while HS-5 showed maximum (47 g). Grain yield was minimum (2323 kg ha-1) for HS-17 and maximum (5742 kg ha-1) for HS-21. Maximum heritability estimate (0.92) was recorded for fresh ear weight, while minimum (0.41) was observed for ear height.","PeriodicalId":78355,"journal":{"name":"Journal of experimental medical sciences","volume":"3 1","pages":"33-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1970-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73323778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The different parameters like Temperature, pH, TDS, conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, alkalinity, free carbon dioxide, chloride, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, phosphates, sulphates, silicates, nitrites, nitrates, BOD and COD were carried out by standard methods. These parameters showed either positive or negative correlation between each other. The analysis revels these parameters are interrelated with each other. From the data it can be said that water of this tank is partially contaminated with human faeces, domestic sewage etc. Hence it is not good quality for culture of fish as well as drinking for animals. The byproducts obtained were pulp, LPC (Leaf protein concentrate), Juice, Deproteinised juice and pressed crop (PC). The dry weight of LPC from each crop was measured. Maize forage LPC was more as compared with other forages. Deproteinised Juice (DPJ) is utilised as a medium for the fermentation of yeast. This yeast growth was compared with the yeast grown on Hansens broth media as control. Various concentration ratios of DPJ and Hansens media were prepared and yeast was fermented. Yeast mycelia grown on DPJ was found higher as compared with other concentrations. The culture filtrates of yeast mycelia collected and used to study the enzyme invertase by immobilisation method and the presence of alcohol was by iodoform test. Almost all the samples of various concentrations showed the presence of alcohol by proper secretion of enzyme zymase. Enzyme invertase appropriately found less in the culture filtrate of yeast mycelia grown on DPJ alone. Therefore DPJ is responsible for less breakdown of sucrose as compared with Hansens media which breaks down more sucrose into glucose and fructose by the enzyme invertase.","PeriodicalId":78355,"journal":{"name":"Journal of experimental medical sciences","volume":"23 1","pages":"09-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1970-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91371189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
