The Subjects were 70 adult Filipino females of ages 17-38 years and 70 Japanese females of ages 14-24 years. The width, height and depth of each facial part were measured and statistically compared. 1. The Japanese females had a broad and long middle face and a long nose, whether elatively or absolutely. The Filipino females had long mouths, broad noses, and large and protruding lips. These lip features are also identified in the Negroid, and are thought to be an adaptation to Southern migration. 2. Though a few items were large in the right face, the left face was relatively large in the Japanese female. In the Filipino female, no items were large in the right face and most were large in the left face. The dentin surfaces were observed with scanning electron and scanning laser microscopes. The brushing caused remarkable abrasion with the traces of toothbrush bristles on account of the abrasive agents, while most of the dentinal tubules were occluded with dentin sludge or covered with smear layers. On the test side, Polyglactin 910 woven mesh was placed over the defect and the flaps were sutured. The defect on the contralateral side served as a control. After healing periods of 4 days, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 13 weeks the animals were killed, and 15-,am, hematoxylin and eosin-stained, undecalcified sections were prepared and examined. By 8 weeks postoperatively the mesh-covered defect had thoroughly healed with new bone, whereas the control showed discontinuous new bone in the defect. The mesh had been completely absorbed. In this study, we observed enamel lamellae in the fissures of caries-free molar teeth of rats, 2 and 4 weeks after birth, by transmitted light microscopy with decalcified sections and by scanning electron microscopy with EDTA-treated samples. Enamel lamellae were always present buccolingually in the fissure enamel. In unerupted teeth, the organic lamellae showing an intermittent structure were composed of the organic matrix, derived from ameloblasts and reduced enamel epithelium, occasionally with these epithelial cells. After eruption, the thin organic membrane of enamel lamellae was probably derived from saliva as well as the organic matrix formed during the enamel formation. The lamellae also contained oral microorganisms and fibrous structures, some of which were formed from microorganisms, under the widely opened fissures containing the deposits of oral microorganisms and diet remnants.
