{"title":"Effects of pulse excimer laser irradiation on the human left ventricular wall.","authors":"M Z Chen, F R Chen, J M Mao, J X Guo, D Y Xie, J R Xu","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

This study was to assess the potential application of excimer lasers in the ablation of myocardium in vitro for the treatment of constant ventricular tachycardia or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A fresh human heart and EMG model 103 XeCl pulse excimer laser machine were used. The pulse repetition rate varied from 1 to 7 Hz. Irradiation directly on the left endocardial and epicardial walls lasted for 10 seconds and was repeated 3 times, creating 3 craters. The histological changes were examined by light microscope. Results showed very close relations between the depth or volume of vaporized craters and the pulse repetition rate on the endocardial (r = 0.9674, P less than 0.001 and r = 0.8962, P less than 0.01, respectively) and epicardial walls (r = 0.9602, P less than 0.001 and r = 0.9612, P less than 0.001, respectively). A sharp, clear border without debris or coagulating necrosis was seen under the microscope. We concluded that the pulse excimer laser, differing from Ar+ or Nd:YAG lasers, might be a powerful tool for manipulating the human ventricular wall, but more work needs to be done before it can be widely applied in the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
","PeriodicalId":77596,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Peking Union Medical College = Chung-kuo i hsueh k'o hsueh yuan, Chung-kuo hsieh ho i k'o ta hsueh hsueh pao","volume":"4 3","pages":"131-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13737385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Pulmonary vasodilator action of ligustrazine, active principle of a traditional Chinese remedy, in rats and ferrets.","authors":"Y N Cai, D Bee, G Barer","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The action of ligustrazine on the pulmonary circulation was tested in isolated perfused rat lung in vitro and autoperfused ferret lower left lobe preparation in vivo. Ligustrazine reduced hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction in a dose-dependent manner. It had a lesser dilator effect on KCl-induced vasoconstriction than verapamil and a relatively small inhibitory effect on the pressor response to angiotensin II. Ligustrazine preferentially inhibited the vasoconstriction caused by hypoxia and almitrine. The increased slope and intercept of the pressure-flow line caused by hypoxic vasoconstriction was reduced to the normal range after administration of ligustrazine (4 mg). Thus ligustrazine proved to be a powerful pulmonary vasodilator; it had a relatively small depressor effect on systemic blood pressure.
","PeriodicalId":77596,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Peking Union Medical College = Chung-kuo i hsueh k'o hsueh yuan, Chung-kuo hsieh ho i k'o ta hsueh hsueh pao","volume":"4 3","pages":"147-52"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13737389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"DNA sequence analysis of the Hind III M fragment from Chinese vaccine strain of vaccinia virus.","authors":"V J Liu, Q Jin, D Y Jin, Y D Hou","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The complete DNA sequence of the Hind III M fragment of vaccinia virus (VV) Tian Tan strain genome was determined by the dideoxynucleotide chain termination method. Three open reading frames (ORFs) were identified in the complementary strand of the sequence, comprised of 2218bp. Among them, ORF K1 initiates its transcription at -45 of the Hind III K fragment. The deduced peptide encoded by K1 contains 284 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 32.48 KDa. Its sequence is homologous to the host range protein of VV Copenhagen strain; the variation is only 2.46% at the amino acid level. ORF M2 could encode a peptide of 21.94 KDa with 196 amino acids. This gene was shown to be homologous to that of the 23 KDa peptide of herpes simplex virus type I. A non-coding region of 204bp located between K1 and M2 is rich in palindromic structures. ORF M1 extends its 3' terminus into the Hind III N fragment. Within the M fragment, M1 can only encode 212 amino acids. The major part of ORF M1 is very similar to the M portion of a possible alpha-amanitin resistance gene isolated from VV-WR strain. This work provides a molecular foundation in the construction of a new insertion vector for the preparation of a recombinant vaccinia virus to be used as a polyvalent live vaccine.
","PeriodicalId":77596,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Peking Union Medical College = Chung-kuo i hsueh k'o hsueh yuan, Chung-kuo hsieh ho i k'o ta hsueh hsueh pao","volume":"4 4","pages":"215-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13773988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We found good correlations between LAP and Q-6 interval (r = 0.88, P less than 0.001), b-s interval (r = -0.78, P less than 0.001), Hs (r = -0.59, P less than 0.001), Hs X b-s interval (r = -0.65, P less than 0.001), and HD/Hs (r = 0.50, P less than 0.001). The mechanisms of change of these parameters were investigated and corresponding regression equations derived. The authors point out that D wave enlargement and HD/Hs increase are determinant indices of LAP elevation and may be used to estimate LAP and to differentiate LAP elevation from simple pulmonary hypertension. Therefore, we conclude that PRG may reflect changes of pressure or volume in the pulmonary vein and thus provide a noninvasive method of monitoring cardiac preload and the pulmonary cycle. In addition, this research may provide the experimental basis for employing PRG in the study of such pathological processes as mitral valve lesion, left heart failure, etc.
","PeriodicalId":77596,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Peking Union Medical College = Chung-kuo i hsueh k'o hsueh yuan, Chung-kuo hsieh ho i k'o ta hsueh hsueh pao","volume":"4 1","pages":"34-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13852312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our data suggest that clinical characteristics indicate the possibility of pheochromocytoma only, while the definite diagnosis of pheochromocytoma must be based on comprehensive analysis of all data obtained from both clinical and laboratory studies. The plasma concentration of free norepinephrine in peripheral veins is helpful in establishing the presence or absence of pheochromocytoma. Both CT scan and meta-I-131-iodobenzylguanidine images are useful noninvasive techniques for localization of pheochromocytoma. {"title":"Reduction of the effects of growth hormone release inhibiting factor enhances plasma growth hormone response to GHRH.","authors":"Y F Shi, X D Fang","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Responses of serum growth hormone (hGH) to glucagon (G), growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) and G/GHRH were measured in 8 normal adults and 6 patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). In normal adults, serum hGH reached its peak value (12.7 +/- 1.6 ng/ml) at 150 +/- 10 min, as blood glucose declined to its minimum after a transitory hyperglycemia in G test. The normal adults were responsive to GHRH test (GH peak 14.7 +/- 2.3 ng/ml at 30 +/- 0 min). In GHD, the responders to both G and GHRH tests showed a strongly positive response in G/GHRH test, with a serum hGH peak value of 34.6 +/- 4.1 ng/ml at 131 +/- 8 min being much higher than that of either single G or GHRH test (P less than 0.01), but without significant difference to the sum of the two single tests (P greater than 0.10). Among GHD patients, only 2 responded to GHRH and G/GHRH tests with hGH peak values 6.8 +/- 0.7 and 6.9 +/- 0.7 ng/ml at 45 +/- 15 and 90 +/- 0 min, respectively, both peak values being essentially similar (P greater than 0.10). We suggest that the mechanism of stimulation of pituitary hGH secretion in G test might involve inhibition of release of hypothalamic GH release inhibiting factor (GHRIF) caused by hypoglycemia after a transitory hyperglycemia following G injection. These results may further confirm our previous postulation (1986) that insulin hypoglycemia may increase hGH release by inhibiting hypothalamic cell secretion of GH release inhibiting factor.
","PeriodicalId":77596,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Peking Union Medical College = Chung-kuo i hsueh k'o hsueh yuan, Chung-kuo hsieh ho i k'o ta hsueh hsueh pao","volume":"4 1","pages":"13-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13708616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
