We studied the voluntary control of saccades in schizophrenic patients with the SPEM dysfunction using an antisaccade task. The mean error rate in the antisaccade task was significantly higher in the two schizophrenic groups with and without a SPEM dysfunction than in the normal control group. Furthermore, the schizophrenic group with the SPEM dysfunction showed significantly more errors than the schizophrenic group without the SPEM dysfunction. These findings seem to suggest a close relationship between the SPEM dysfunction and the appearance of errors which indicates an inability to inhibit reflexive saccades voluntarily in the antisaccade task. However, 4 of 10 subjects with the SPEM dysfunction showed an error rate less than the mean error rate of the schizophrenic group without the SPEM dysfunction. So, a voluntary control disorder of saccades as the main cause of the SPEM dysfunction appeared to be unlikely. An interesting finding of this study was that many schizophrenic subjects with the SPEM dysfunction showed errors with the latencies similar to those in express saccades, particularly in the rightward direction. This finding may suggest a close relationship between the SPEM dysfunction in schizophrenic patients and some pathological conditions of express saccades such as disinhibition of express saccades.</p>","PeriodicalId":77425,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese journal of psychiatry and neurology","volume":"48 1","pages":"13-22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/j.1440-1819.1994.tb02991.x","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18930255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A bank of bandpass FIR (Finite Impulse Response) digital filters is used to obtain EEG prints. EEG prints were taken from four areas (F3, F4, O1 and O2) of EEG when healthy subjects were at rest with their eyes closed. The pattern of the prints was classified into four types: alpha type, beta type, alpha + beta type and complex type. It was found that EEG prints may vary from person-to-person but they usually do not vary much between the four areas for a given person. The method is further modified to obtain \"differential EEG prints\" to investigate whether meaningful higher frequency EEG components exist. Differentiation of EEG resulted in marked intensification of the fast waves, using 0.14 Hz as the critical point. In differential EEG print with higher order differentiation, amplification in the high frequency components increase their frequency. As a result, it is possible to observe variations in the high frequency components, which are otherwise not detectable in the usual EEG print. EEG print can be used for representing the function of the brain. Using the method for classification of EEG print patterns, described in this paper, we can clarify not only the characteristics of the normal brain but also the pathophysiology of mentally-ill patients.</p>","PeriodicalId":77425,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese journal of psychiatry and neurology","volume":"48 1","pages":"91-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/j.1440-1819.1994.tb03002.x","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18929577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

VPA (200 or 400 mg) or an inactive placebo was administered according to a completely randomized double-blind, cross-over design. ERPs were recorded one hour after medication was given. VPA did not affect the latencies of N100, P200, N200 and P300. Although on the whole VPA had no effect on the amplitudes of the ERP components in the subjects, it increased the P300 amplitude in the low P300 amplitude subjects and decreased it in the high P300 amplitude subjects. This tendency toward a bidirectional response was also seen in the P200 and N200 amplitudes. It was concluded that the response which takes place being dependent on the difference in the initial values was recognized on the effect of a single administration of 200 or 400 mg VPA to ERPs. The results of this study are discussed, especially in relation to the law of initial value.</p>","PeriodicalId":77425,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese journal of psychiatry and neurology","volume":"48 1","pages":"111-21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/j.1440-1819.1994.tb03004.x","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18930252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, the latter suppresses only MAP-induced abnormal hyperactivity but hardly suppresses a purpose-oriented ICSS associated with the reward system. Therefore, LiCl inhibits abnormal hyperactivity induced by MAP, but it does not suppress physiological motivation. Using the two types of antipsychotic drugs, the authors propose a method of combining the ICSS and locomotor activity together with its traces.
