It is designed for receiving a 90-100 MHz carrier wave and consists of plural unit receiving antennas (UAs). The plural UAs are placed underwater to cover the area where the target fish carrying the transmitter is swimming. The UAs are equally spaced and have a directional coupling amplifier to supply the signals received to the coaxial cable. The optimal length of the UA was found to be 16.5 cm (a half wavelength in water) and optimal spacing was 2 m (one wavelength along coaxial cable) when 95 MHz was used as the carrier frequency. Using this 'aquaerial', long-term monitoring of EEG signals from the olfactory bulb of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) swimming freely in natural environments was achieved.
","PeriodicalId":77139,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers of medical and biological engineering : the international journal of the Japan Society of Medical Electronics and Biological Engineering","volume":"9 4","pages":"285-94"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21571051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Muscle activity-torque-velocity relations in human elbow extensor muscles.","authors":"T Uchiyama, K Akazawa","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

With the aid of an artificial neural network technique, we investigated relationships between the torque and extending velocity of an elbow at constant muscle activation in healthy volunteers. Each subject sat on a chair and was able to move his upper- and forearm on a shoulder-high horizontal plane. First, with the gravitational force of a weight hanging from a pulley, the subject's wrist was pulled to flex the elbow. Next, the subject was instructed to extend his elbow joint at a constant velocity. Integrated electromyograms (IEMGs), elbow joint angle and torque were measured while the elbow was being extending. Then the relationships among these three variables were modeled using an artificial neural network where IEMGs, joint angle and velocity were the inputs, and torque was the output. After back propagation learning, we presented various combinations of IEMGs, elbow joint angle and velocity to the model, and estimated the elbow joint torque to obtain the torque-velocity relationship for constant muscle activation. The torque decreased in a nearly linear manner as the velocity increased. This was caused by slow extending velocity and was explained by Hill's equation at slow velocity.
","PeriodicalId":77139,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers of medical and biological engineering : the international journal of the Japan Society of Medical Electronics and Biological Engineering","volume":"9 4","pages":"305-13"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21571053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we describe an inverse loop method for eliminating this interference. The conductive loop area is one factor that is known to affect power line interference. However, two other variables, i.e. effective body area and inverse loop area, must be also considered. This work describes the relationship among these variables. We show that electromagnetic induction can be reduced to a very small value by this method. Because this method is simple and effective, it is useful and valuable not only for ECG signals but also for other bio-potential signal recording systems.
","PeriodicalId":77139,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers of medical and biological engineering : the international journal of the Japan Society of Medical Electronics and Biological Engineering","volume":"9 3","pages":"229-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21470985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Suitable location and optimum bladder width for the occluding cuff used for indirect arterial blood pressure measurements at the wrist.","authors":"W Lu, A Tsukada, A Kawarada, K Sasaki","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Using a finite element method (FEM) and a volume oscillometric method with a photo-electric plethysmograph, we tried to determine which location(s) and which bladder width(s) of the occluding cuff would allow the most accurate indirect blood pressure measurements at the human wrist. Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging of the wrist allowed us to determine the geometry of two-dimensional (2D) finite element models. FEM analysis showed that the pressure transmission ratio (calculated tissue pressure: externally applied pressure) from the cuff to the radial artery (RA) was 100% when the cuff was placed over the site (L1) at which the RA crosses the most protuberant spot on the volar aspect of the distal end of the radius. In fact, the mean blood pressure (BPM) measured at this site in human subjects coincided with that measured at the upper arm (BPMA). In addition, a three-dimensional (3D) FEM was constructed by extending the 2D FEM at site L1 in the longitudinal direction to investigate the relation between pressure transmission to the RA and cuff bladder width. FEM analysis using the 3D finite element model showed that for all cuff widths greater than 0.25 times the diameter of the wrist, the external pressure was transmitted almost completely to the RA beneath the cuff center. Moreover, when the cuff width was as large as 0.45 times the diameter of the wrist, the BPM measured at site L1 in human subjects was similar to the BPMA. The theoretical and experimental results in the present study both suggest that for accurate indirect blood pressure measurements at the wrist, the L1 site is a suitable location for the occluding cuff and a cuff whose bladder width is more than one-third but less than one-half the wrist diameter can be used.
","PeriodicalId":77139,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers of medical and biological engineering : the international journal of the Japan Society of Medical Electronics and Biological Engineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"9-29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21223462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The influence of simultaneous intra-aortic balloon pumping and mechanical ventilation on hemodynamic parameters--numerical simulation.","authors":"M Darowski, C De Lazzari, G Ferrari, F Clemente, M Guaragno","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABC) is one of the methods to assist circulation. Its application is supposed to increase coronary blood flow (Qcor) and myocardial oxygen supply. Mechanical ventilation of the lungs causes some side effects that influence mainly hemodynamics, i.e. it decreases cardiac output (CO) and systemic aortic pressure (Pas) but increases systemic venous pressure (Pvs). The aim of this study was to assess the influence of IABC on hemodynamic parameters when mechanical ventilation of the lungs is used as well. We assumed pathological conditions of the heart as reduced left ventricle elastance (Ev = 0.77 mmHg/cm3) and increased left ventricle rest volume (V0 = 10 cm3). Also peripheral systemic arterial resistance (Ras) took three different values. CARDIOSIM, a computer simulator of the human cardiovascular system, was used to assess the changes of hemodynamic parameters [CO, Pas, Pvs, and pulmonary arterial pressure (Pap)] when IABC and mechanical ventilation of the lungs were applied simultaneously. Computer simulation showed that application of IABC increased such variables as CO (by approximately equal to 17%), maximum value of Pas (by approximately equal to 20%), while left atrial pressure (Pla) was diminished (by approximately equal to 30%). On the other hand, Pvs and Pap were not strongly affected by IABC, but they were dramatically dependent on intrathoracic pressure. This means that Pvs, Pap, and Pla should be carefully monitored during IABC and artificial ventilation.
","PeriodicalId":77139,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers of medical and biological engineering : the international journal of the Japan Society of Medical Electronics and Biological Engineering","volume":"9 2","pages":"155-74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21315183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve easy attachment and easy control of attachment pressure of the ATR prism to the mucous membrane of the lip, a chalcogenide optical fiber with an ATR prism built in the tip was used. The same glucose-specific peaks at wave numbers of 1080 and 1033 cm-1 as glucose solutions were found in a spectrum through the mucous membrane of the lip. With a constant pressure of the ATR prism to the mucous membrane of the lip of 6.7 x 10(3) dyn/cm2, coefficients of variation of measurements within the day and of day-to-day measurements were 3.8 and 5.4% respectively. To eliminate baseline drifts and interference of body constituents other than glucose, the difference absorbances at 1080 cm-1 between spectra measured at the postprandial state and background spectrum obtained at the fasting state as an individual characteristic were evaluated. Following i.v. pulsatile injection of glucose, the difference absorbances at 1080 cm-1 nicely followed the changes in blood glucose concentrations with a time delay of 4 min. In daily blood glucose monitoring, a highly significant correlation between the difference absorbances and increases in blood glucose concentrations above the fasting level was obtained (r = 0.920, P < 0.01). From these experiments, it was suggested that FT-IR spectroscopy with a chalcogenide optical fiber could be useful clinically for non-invasive monitoring of glucose through the mucous membrane of the lip.
","PeriodicalId":77139,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers of medical and biological engineering : the international journal of the Japan Society of Medical Electronics and Biological Engineering","volume":"9 2","pages":"137-53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21315184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
