Light from a helium-neon laser was reflected from a plane mirror taped to the skin over the patella to a glass plate which generated a set of fringes by interference of light reflected from the front and rear surfaces of the plate. The movement of the fringe system was detected using a photodiode. The optical measurements of displacement were compared with those deduced from an accelerometer attached to the same joint. The method was found to be capable of detecting patellar displacements in the range from 20 microns to 180 microns.</p>","PeriodicalId":77070,"journal":{"name":"Clinical physics and physiological measurement : an official journal of the Hospital Physicists' Association, Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Medizinische Physik and the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics","volume":"12 3","pages":"219-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1088/0143-0815/12/3/002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13093913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electronic circuitry is described that is capable of driving the transmitter coil assembly placed outside the animal and detecting an area-related signal induced in the one-turn coil in vivo. When a piece of fine pliable metal thread encircles the area of interest (e.g. the mitral/aortic valve orifice) so as to form a single loop, the electrical potential between the ends of the loop is linearly related to the size of the area irrespective of its shape. The principle of measurement, construction of transmitter coil assembly, and simple but accurate direct calibration are also described.</p>","PeriodicalId":77070,"journal":{"name":"Clinical physics and physiological measurement : an official journal of the Hospital Physicists' Association, Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Medizinische Physik and the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics","volume":"12 3","pages":"253-60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1088/0143-0815/12/3/006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13093915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cross-sectional area (CA) of the tube and the intraluminal pressure were measured simultaneously by a specially designed balloon catheter. The method enables induction of standardised changes of CA at different rates. Applied in the female urethra the induction results in a distinct pressure response which increases with increasing rate of change of CA as well as size of the induction. The inflation of the balloon simulates a forced opening of the urethra and hence leakage. Obviously, urinary incontinence takes place at forced opening of the urethra. Accordingly, this novel method can give important information on the pathophysiology of stress urinary incontinence in particular and the physiology of sphincter functions in general.</p>","PeriodicalId":77070,"journal":{"name":"Clinical physics and physiological measurement : an official journal of the Hospital Physicists' Association, Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Medizinische Physik and the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics","volume":"12 2","pages":"163-70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1088/0143-0815/12/2/005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13017147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yes, but only if one becomes much more outward-looking. Unless there is a major change of climate within the NHS, the pressure will continue to be to provide a still cheaper service with little of the research and development that has so enriched the Health Service over the past forty years. One must therefore look beyond the NHS, develop one's collaboration with industry, promote one's undoubted excellence throughout Europe. The thickness and shape of these windows affect the characteristics of the ultrasound beam and partly determine the spatial resolution of transcranial Doppler scanning. We have studied the effects of temporal bone on the ultrasound beam and sample volume characteristics of the EME Transcan 2 MHz transducer using a stepper motor, computer-controlled ultrasound plotting system. The lateral and axial spatial dimensions of the sample volume, and a direct estimate of the lateral resolution of the system, were determined at various depths of interest using Doppler targets. The results in this initial study of a small number of specimens indicates a decrease in sample width, and hence an increase in lateral resolution, presumably due to the lensing effect of the skull cusping. The estimated lateral resolution of the system is of the order of 4 mm.</p>","PeriodicalId":77070,"journal":{"name":"Clinical physics and physiological measurement : an official journal of the Hospital Physicists' Association, Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Medizinische Physik and the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics","volume":"12 2","pages":"157-61"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1088/0143-0815/12/2/004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13017146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
