{"title":"Extraction of 'nylon' teeth and associated abnormalities in Tanzanian children.","authors":"M I Matee, W H van Palenstein Helderman","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of extraction of 'nylon' teeth and its long term adverse effects on the permanent dentition of Tanzanians. A total of 1890 subjects, aged between 3 and 5 years, and 1377 subjects aged between 12 and 19 years, in different parts of the country were examined. The prevalence of missing teeth in the primary dentition due to 'nylon' teeth practice ranged from 0% to 16.9%, with a weighted mean of 9.5%. Canines were the most involved teeth, accounting for 95% of all missing teeth. Mutilated permanent teeth, a result of traditional extraction of deciduous tooth germs, were observed only in Singida district in 8% of the examined subjects. 22.8% of these mutilations presented as malformations, while the remaining 77.2% presented as missing teeth. Most missing teeth and all the malformed teeth were seen in the mandible. The mandibular canines were the most affected, followed by the mandibular lateral incisors. It is suggested that 'nylon' teeth practice in Tanzania may be a recent invention rather than a traditional tribe related custom. The precariously high prevalence of 'nylon' teeth practice in Tanzania, and the people's perception of this malpractice, requires that particular attention be paid to this issue during oral health educational programmes in the affected communities.
","PeriodicalId":76983,"journal":{"name":"African dental journal : official publication of the Federation of African Dental Associations = Journal dentaire africain","volume":"5 ","pages":"21-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12981389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"A cytologic study of the effect of Kolanut on the keratinization of the palatal mucosal of Nigerian smokers.","authors":"O Odukoya, T Roberts, G Aroll","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

An exfoliative cytologic study of the palatal mucosa was undertaken in 96 Nigerian male volunteers aged between 17 and 65 years. The volunteers were categorised into the following four groups: Group 1--Smokers, kolanut chewers; Group 2--Smokers; Group 3--Kolanut chewers; and Group 4--Non-smokers, non-kolanut chewers, Variation in the degree of palatal keratinization was evaluated using karyopyknotic indices. Statistical analysis based on one way analysis of variance showed that smoking and kolanut chewing had a statistically significant influence (P less than 0.05) on the variation of palatal keratinization among the volunteers. Distribution of karyopyknotic indices among groups was such that Group 1 greater than Group 2 greater than Group 3 greater than Group 4. Observation from this study suggests a potentiation of the cigarette smoking-induced palatal keratinization by kolanut.
","PeriodicalId":76983,"journal":{"name":"African dental journal : official publication of the Federation of African Dental Associations = Journal dentaire africain","volume":"4 1-5","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13284721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Opinions of Botswana dental therapists and students about their professional education.","authors":"R Croucher, A Hall","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

This paper presents an evaluation of the training programme for dental therapists in Botswana. It describes the impetus for the creation of the training programme and its content provided by the principles of Primary Health Care. The opinions of the students and serving dental therapists were investigated through self-complete questionnaires. Both groups wished to develop advanced restorative skills and wanted more time to be allocated to that section of the course which would allow this. In contrast, their interest was less in other sections of the course more specifically concerned with the principles of Primary Health Care, such as the development of communication skills. It is suggested that the findings reflect a confusion about the practice of Primary Health Care.
","PeriodicalId":76983,"journal":{"name":"African dental journal : official publication of the Federation of African Dental Associations = Journal dentaire africain","volume":"4 1-5","pages":"20-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13285281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Prematurely erupted deciduous teeth in a Nigerian baby--a case report.","authors":"G A Aderinokun, M O Onadeko","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

This paper reports the case of a thirteen-day-old male child who was brought to the clinic with lower central incisors which had been erupted into the oral cavity from birth. The teeth, which resembled the normal deciduous series, were mobile. A striking observation was the anxious behaviour of the mother which prompted further probing. History taking revealed that the mother's anxiety was caused by societal unpleasant reaction to her baby's prematurely erupted teeth. The pressure was so intense that she had to seek medical help. At this tender age of the baby, it is advisable to preserve prematurely erupted teeth in order to prevent malocclusion resulting from premature loss of the deciduous teeth. Therefore, it is highly essential that people in this society be enlightened about such cases in order to reduce the psychological stress on parents of children with a similar condition.
","PeriodicalId":76983,"journal":{"name":"African dental journal : official publication of the Federation of African Dental Associations = Journal dentaire africain","volume":"4 1-5","pages":"25-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13285282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The entire sample consisted of 47% boys and 53% girls. Angle's and Foster's classifications were used in the study. Sagittal, vertical and transversal occlusion variables were included in the classification. Most of the children had Angle's class I in both townships. No child had distal occlusion in Bukoba but 8% of the school children had Angle's class III which was present in only 5% of the Moshi children. The most prevalent occlusal anomalies in both populations were large overjet and deep bite (greater than or equal to 3.5 mm), the prevalence of which was significantly higher in Moshi. Open bite also occurred more often in Moshi girls than Bukoba girls. No child had scissors bite in Moshi. Open bite and scissors bite in Bukoba girls and cross-bite in Moshi girls were rare. Diastema mediale prevailed mostly in the maxilla in the whole sample. About one fifth of the whole sample had crowding. The results suggest that different occlusal and space characteristics are present in Bukoba and Moshi children.
","PeriodicalId":76983,"journal":{"name":"African dental journal : official publication of the Federation of African Dental Associations = Journal dentaire africain","volume":"4 1-5","pages":"6-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13285283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Matters relating to tooth sizes in Kenyan and British subjects.","authors":"P N Turner, A Richardson","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The mesio-distal widths of teeth and the breadth of the dental arches were measured on study casts of twenty young Kenyan African males and twenty young male British adults in Belfast, Northern Ireland. All subjects had normal occlusion. Measurements were repeated for reproducibility testing which proved satisfactory. With the exception of the lower central incisor, all the Kenyan teeth were larger than their Caucasian counterparts, but only the differences relating to the premolar and molar teeth reached the level of statistical significance. The lower arch breadths measured between the first premolars and between the first permanent molars proved significantly greater in the Kenyan group. In the upper arch, the mean premolar breadth was greater but the difference in molar breadth was not statistically significant. This finding relates to the diminished buccal overjet in the Kenyan subject.
","PeriodicalId":76983,"journal":{"name":"African dental journal : official publication of the Federation of African Dental Associations = Journal dentaire africain","volume":"3 2","pages":"17-23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13781648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The foramen was related to the apex of the second premolar root in 55.63 percent of the radiographs, while 26.99 percent occurred in the interdental space between the first and second premolars. Location between the roots of the second premolar and first molar was observed in 12.25 percent while relationship to the roots of the first molar was found in 3.30 percent. Location around the apex of the first premolar accounted for 1.66 percent. Only one foramen (0.17 percent) was found mesial to the first premolar. The radiographs of the right and left sides were available for 277 patients. The location of the mental foramen was asymmetrical in 12.3 percent of these patients, the right foramen being more frequently located posteriorly than the left foramen. The prevalence of asymmetrical location of the foramen was more frequent in females in whom it occurred in 53 percent.
","PeriodicalId":76983,"journal":{"name":"African dental journal : official publication of the Federation of African Dental Associations = Journal dentaire africain","volume":"3 2","pages":"2-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13781650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
