{"title":"Fluorescent antibody study of diseased, end-stage human kidneys.","authors":"J F Chiou, W D Hillis","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Forty cases of diseased kidneys at end-stage were studied by fluorescent antibody technique in search for viral etiology of glomerulonephritis and other renal diseases. Among these 40 cases, 12 (30%) were ascribed to immune complex disease because of detection of immunoglobulins and complement in glomeruli of the same kidney specimen. In 8 cases (20%) only complement was detected in glomeruli. In the remaining 50% neither complement nor immunoglobulin deposit was found in glomeruli. The etiologies of the latter cases remain unknown. Of 12 cases of kidney disease of immune complex origin, hepatitis virus type B surface antigen was detected in 2 cases. In these 2 cases the magnitude of immune complex deposits with complement was greater than that of other cases. Other than hepatitis B virus antigen, no other viruses including Coxsackieviruses, ECHO viruses, and HSV-1 could be detected by indirect fluorescent antibody techniques. {"title":"Possible role of infectious simian foamy virus DNA in persistent infection.","authors":"C T Chu, J J Hooks","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Simian foamy virus type 7 (SFV-7) can persist in peripheral blood leukocytes of SFV-7-infected rabbits. Rabbit peripheral blood leukoyctes cultured in vitro did not support the growth of SFV-7, but low titer of virus could be detected after 4 to 5 days incubation. The DNA derived from SFV-7 infected primary rabbit kidney cells is infectious. The preformed pigment could be released from dead cells. Pigmentation was not correlated directly with number of viable organisms in the culture. High concentration of maltose likewise inhibited pyocyanine production. {"title":"[Development of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in the lung of Achatina fulica (author's transl)].","authors":"Y F Wen","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Twenty-four Achatina fulica from Pai-sha of the Pescardores Islands, where no Angiostrogylus cantonensis has been found in A. fulica(4), were inoculated with the first stage larvae of A cantonensis. One snail was killed every day after 24 days following inoculation. The lung of each snail was separated and examined for larvae under microscope. The same lung was then digested with pepsin. The larvae recovered after pepsin digestion were examined for more detailed morphology. This study confirmed that the first stage larvae of A. cantonensis passed through the respiratory pore to the lung of A. fulica and developed into infectious form (3rd stage larvae) in the lung. The second and third stage larvae were found in the lung on the 7th and 17th day respectively after inoculation.
