Two tests (reading comprehension, listening comprehension) were administered to 221 4th graders in classroom context at two sessions. Order of administration was balanced. Additionally, verbal reasoning and speed of information processing were assessed, marks in German were collected. On the whole, performance in listening comprehension exceeds reading comprehension as expected for children at that age. In spite of this mean difference a high correlation between the variables was found. In accordance with theory, the relationship between reading and listening comprehension is stronger when the influence of reading specific abilities is lower and reading material is less complex. Listening comprehension appears to be of more relevance to the prediction of reading comprehension than verbal intelligence, speed of information processing, and marks in German, even when listening comprehension is introduced as the last predictor in multiple regression analysis. It is suggested to emphasize the role of listening comprehension in the assessment and prognosis of reading disabilities.</p>","PeriodicalId":76858,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift fur Psychologie mit Zeitschrift fur angewandte Psychologie","volume":"200 4","pages":"345-61"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12536764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This presentation includes discussion of 1) when personal, reflexive, possessive, and indefinite pronominal forms appear in child-initiated contexts, 2) which errors emerge, and 3) which communicative functions utterances with pronouns have in dialogue. A first comparison of German-speaking and (American-)English-speaking children's usage is offered, focussing in particular on the use of the pronominal forms I/ich, you/du, and my/mein. This crosslinguistic comparison reveals differences in the age of first use, but simultaneously suggests similarities in functional characteristics of such usage. A comparison of both physiological fear and allergic symptoms lets a relationship seem obvious between anaphylactic or collapse inclination and psychological fear reaction. Mediated by cognitive variables persons with emphatic perception may develop an association between anxiety and allergic processes with high probability, the reciprocal influence of which can increase with vehemence. Relationships between alpha activity and short-term memory performance are discussed referring to an approach suggested by Lebedev and Lutzky (1973). These authors suggest a secondary relationship in considering processing as well as storing of information as a result of the superposition of oscillatory processes which differ from one another an elementary period (relative refractoriness) specific to individuals. Some specifications of scan rate and STM span suggested by the authors seem to be untenable for empirical and logical reasons. Alternative explanations are proposed referring to the time quantum model (TQM) by Geissler (1985, 1987, 1990, 1991). Straight forward expansions of this model lead to the hypothesis of an \"alpha band\" consisting of 9 discrete frequencies. Predictions on scanning rhythms can be derived from this via the assumption that these represent segmentations caused by pairwise resonance. A modification of the Lebedev-Lutzky assumption on spans is proposed assuming an optimum code for stored information.</p>","PeriodicalId":76858,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift fur Psychologie mit Zeitschrift fur angewandte Psychologie","volume":"199 2","pages":"121-43"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12849856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the two chromatic axes two linear opponent colors systems are defined: a red/green-system and a yellowish/bluish-system. A numerical relation is presented to describe color adaptation for the yellowish/bluish-system under adaptation to (unique) yellow and (unique) blue: two pairs of color stimuli are equivalent with regard to the yellowish/bluish-system - consisting of a test stimulus and an adaptation stimulus, respectively - if the ratios from the yellowish/bluish-coordinates of test stimulus and adaptation stimulus are identical. A control of brightness and the red/green-system is presupposed. For several (unique) yellow and (unique) blue adaptation stimuli it is examined how a test stimulus that appears neither yellowish nor bluish changes its location on the (unique) yellow - (unique) blue axis within color space. Three observers take part in the experiment. For each observer a plane of constant brightness and the opponent colors axes are estimated experimentally. The data show that the ratios from the yellowish/bluish coordinates of test stimulus and adaptation stimulus are essentially constant. The results are compared with analogous data for the red/green-system. The findings provide evidence for the specification of the three phenomenal axes. The specification is discussed with regard to Hering's opponent colors theory and Krauskopf's three \"cardinal\" axes [1982, Vision Research, 22, 1123-1131].</p>","PeriodicalId":76858,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift fur Psychologie mit Zeitschrift fur angewandte Psychologie","volume":"199 3","pages":"251-65"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12850105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assuming that fear-relevant CSs are good predictors of aversive UCSs, while fear-irrelevant CSs are relatively bad predictors of aversive UCSs, the present study examined the effect of fear relevance on electrodermal UCR diminution during the acquisition phase of a single cue conditioning procedure. Four groups were studied, each of which consisted of 12 subjects. Group 1 had a fear-relevant CS (a slide of an angry face) paired with a UCS (7 mA shock), whereas group 2 had a fear-irrelevant CS (a slide of a happy face) paired with a UCS. Groups 3 and 4 had unpaired presentations of the CS and UCS and served as control groups for 1 and 2. There were 4 habituation, 8 acquisition, 4 recovery (UCS-only), and 6 extinction (CS-only) trials. While overall UCR levels were lower in the paired than in the unpaired control groups, it was also found that the size of UCR decrement and subsequent recovery was greater in the angry face CS-paired group than in the happy face CS-paired group.
