The number of ribosomes on sections of the endoplasmic reticulum turned toward the mitochondria is considerably greater than on other sectors of the membranes. Thermal activation was shown to lead to a decrease in the number of cells in parthenogenetic embryos in comparison with normal, zygotic development. The accumulation of glycogen in the adrenals and liver in 15.5-21.5-day old embryos was used as the index. The maximum glycogen concentration in the adrenals and the minimum in the liver were detected in 15.5-16.5-day embryos, i.e., before the adrenals had begun to produce glucocorticoids. A sharp decrease in glycogen in the adrenals was observed in 17.5-day embryos, and an appreciable accumulation in the liver in 18.5-day embryos, which coincides with the beginning of the glucocorticoid function. Decapitation and encephalectomy performed at an age of 17.5-19.5 days of development of the embryos, were invariably accompanied by a significant increase in the glycogen content in the adrenals and a decrease in its level in the liver in the case of investigation after two days. Mg-2+- and Ca2- minus 2+-stimulated ATPases are the predominant forms of ATPase activity in the egg, and their level is almost constant during development. The loach egg also contains (Na-+--K-+)-dependent ATPase, which is maximally active at pH 6.85 and at a ratio Na-+:K-+ Equals 5:1. This activity is negligible or absent in homogenates of unfertilized eggs, increases during cleavage, but disappears at the end of the period of cleavage. The fragments were capable of changing their shape quickly (actually during separation) or after a latent period of several minutes. Rapid deformations were not prevented by cooling or by moderate doses of cyanide; as a rule they were connected with contraction of the surface area of the cells of the fragment and they can be regarded as relaxation to forms with lower mechanical energy. The direction of the deformation usually coincides with the subsequent normal morphogenesis of the particular anlage. Deformations with a latent period are suppressed by cooling and by the addition of cyanide, which lead to an increase in the surface area of individual cells, but they reduce the total surface area of the fragment. The shape of the fragments becomes more complex: they become irregularly twisted, they form folds, and they separate into spherical regions with stretched surfaces (\"drops\"). These processes are connected with the performance of positive mechanical work by the intracellular contractile systems. The fi gene retards optic-vesicle growth, while the Mi-wh gene inhibits ectomesenchyme migration. It was shown that the mitotic index of the optic-vesicle wall and the retinal rudiment was considerably higher in Mi-wh/Mi-whfi/fi embryos than in fi/fi embryos and lower than in Mi-wh/Mi-wh and +/+ embryos. Ectomesenchyme affected by the white gene stimulated optic-vesicle growth, to some extent suppressing the effect of the fidget gene. The stimulation of optic-vesicle growth in the double homozygotes led to intensified induction of the lens placode. At the stages of the middle blastula and early gastrula, the G1 phase is shorter than in the G2 phase, while at the neurula stage, the G1 phase is far longer than the G2 phase. In the first series a tumor induced by cellophane film, was grafted into syngeneic and allogeneic mice, and antilymphocytic serum (ALS) was then injected. Metastases occurred only in allogeneic recipients receiving ALS. It was thus shown that the ability of cells of this particular tumor to metastasize is not a property inherent in its cells but is acquired by them as a result of interaction with the recipient organism. In the second series it was shown by two immunological methods that the cells of metastases arising under these conditions contain tissue compatibility antigens of donor and recipient origin, i. e., that they are somatic hybridsmin the third series skin from individuals of another strain was grafted on to mice and ALS was injected; hepatomas developed in 74% of these mice.
