It was also found that the public water supply contains a mean fluoride content of 0.379 ppm. In formocresol group 90% clinical and radiological success rate and in glutaraldehyde group 100% clinical and radiological success rate was observed. {"title":"Disruptive behavior during dental treatment of uncooperative children.","authors":"G T Lee, G M Humphris, R H Birch, L H Mair","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>This study examines the pattern of behavior of children referred to the Liverpool Dental Hospital for previous lack of cooperation during dental treatment. During a normal treatment session a proportion of these patients refused to allow treatment to proceed. Comparisons were made of the behavioral profiles obtained from detailed observation of treatment by videotape recordings between children who refused or accepted treatment with a comparison group of children. Refusers were characterized by behavior, which prevented treatment from continuing, e.g., closing their mouths and by weeping. Radiographically the tooth was observed to have a large radiolucency in the crown. The surgical, orthodontic and restorative management of the case is presented with a brief literature review. {"title":"Freeze-dried bone in pulpotomy procedures in monkey.","authors":"S Fadavi, A W Anderson, I C Punwani","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of freeze-dried bone on amputated pulps. Fifteen primary and one permanent monkey teeth were treated with freeze-dried bone. As the control group, another fifteen primary teeth were treated with calcium hydroxide and fifteen primary and one permanent teeth with formocresol. Four other primary teeth pulps were amputated and sealed with tin foil and IRM as controls. Twelve mandibular incisors were left intact. Histologically all but three teeth treated with human freeze-dried bone after three months showed a complete or partial calcific barrier directly below the amputation site. Normal appearing odontoblastic cells were noted below the calcific barrier. The apical third was vital with an occasional chronic inflammatory cell visible. The histological findings of teeth treated with calcium-hydroxide were very similar to freeze-dried bone. All but four teeth showed a complete calcific barrier at the amputation site. The odontoblastic cells were normal in appearance and the inflammatory cell reactions decreased from the middle portion toward the apical region. {"title":"Toxicity testing of sealants: a tissue implant study.","authors":"D N Ranalli, B N Appel, H H Langkamp, H B Henteleff","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The toxicity of pit and fisure sealants implanted into the subcutaneous tissues of guinea pigs was tested using the protocol for toxicity testing derived from the ADA/ANSI Document No. 41, 1982. The materials tested were Delton autopolymerized and photopolymerized, and Concise White autopolymerized and photopolymerized. After two weeks, reactive fibrosis and mild to moderately severe foreign body reactions were noted. After 12 weeks, only thin fibrous walls infiltrated occasionally by small numbers of chronic inflammatory cells were observed. The results of this investigation appear to indicate that following subcutaneous implantation of a pit and fissure sealant, a foreign body reaction will most likely take place during the first two weeks, but will be resolved by 12 weeks. Furthermore, than an initial reactive fibrosis will give way to a thin fibrosis wall by 12 weeks, and the initial inflammatory response will subside. {"title":"The mythology of the killer deciduous canine tooth in southern Sudan.","authors":"S P Baba, E J Kay","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>In Southern Sudan it is a commonly held belief that the unerupted deciduous canine tooth is injurious to the health of infants and that it causes diarrheal diseases. The teeth are therefore often removed by native extractors in an attempt to alleviate the symptoms of these dangerous diseases. This study examined the prevalence of this practice among babies presenting at a hospital, and examined the health status of the infants involved. The 90 infants in the study had all had at least one deciduous tooth removed, and the great majority were suffering from dehydration, caused by various abdominal diseases.
