Fifty-nine extracted or exfoliated caries free primary anterior human teeth were used. The cleaning and polishing methods used in this study were as follows: application of 10% NaOCl, polishing with a brush cone or a polishing brush at a low speed (600-6000 r.p.m.), polishing with a brush cone and various polishing pastes, cleaning with an air polisher Prophy-Jet or Quick-Jet with NaHCO3 powder and water. The following observations were obtained using the SEM: (1) Air polishing systems were useful for cleaning the enamel surface, (2) It was likely that materials such as organic films will remain on the enamel surface polished with a brush cone or polishing brush alone, and (3) The effect of 10% NaOCl application for 30 seconds was the lowest.</p>","PeriodicalId":76658,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of pedodontics","volume":"13 3","pages":"253-69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13827940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The severity of this disorder is variable and affects the anatomical landmarks essential for establishing the proper pathway for needle insertion prior to deposition of the local anesthetic solution to attain regional mandibular anesthesia preparatory to dental procedures. This paper describes normal anatomical considerations for regional anesthesia in the mandibular arch, deviations in normal anatomy found in patients with hemifacial microsomia, the rationale for suggesting modifications to standard techniques for mandibular anesthesia in patients with this disorder, and presents ways for the dentist to achieve anesthesia (analgesia) on the affected side of the mandibular arch in patients with hemifacial microsomia.</p>","PeriodicalId":76658,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of pedodontics","volume":"13 4","pages":"345-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13779874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The patients were first monitored in the dental clinic, using the conventional or the IMT on alternate visits for a total of four visits. Plaque scores recorded at all four visits showed significant (P less than 0.001) reduction of plaque measured in percentage of surfaces cleaned when the IMT was used. In the second part of the study, the patients were given the IMT to use at home. The plaque index scored 7, 21 and 35 days later, decreased significantly (P less than 0.001) with time. The same was true for the gingival index. Furthermore, during each of the last three visits, patients were also evaluated for the ability to perform oral hygiene with the IMT in the dental office. This ability was significantly improved (P less than 0.05) at all visits. The Individually Modified Toothbrush appears to be an effective mean to improve the oral hygiene and gingival health of cerebral palsy patients.</p>","PeriodicalId":76658,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of pedodontics","volume":"13 4","pages":"331-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13678476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
