The data stem from a national interview survey conducted in 1986, and the sample is considered to be representative of the total adult Norwegian population. By far the most important sources of information related to HIV/AIDS are television, newspapers, and radio. The subgroup pattern clearly reflects the general pattern of media consumption in Norway. Only 2% regarded friends as important information sources, indicating that HIV/AIDS is not included in the agenda of interpersonal communication, either because of lack of personal interest in the issue or because HIV/AIDS is a taboo subject. The judgement of the credibility of the information sources corresponds to the judgement of the importance of information sources at the aggregate level. Totally, 2% reported having changed sexual behaviour because of fear of HIV/AIDS. The youngest age group reported change (4%) and intended change (6%) more often than did the other age groups. As for the attitudes towards homosexuals, the present study indicates a slight increase in negative attitude towards homosexuals because of fear of HIV/AIDS.
","PeriodicalId":76239,"journal":{"name":"NIPH annals","volume":"11 1","pages":"9-18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14531643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"AIDS--public knowledge in Norway 1986.","authors":"P Kraft, J Rise","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

This paper studied different kinds of knowledge related to HIV/AIDS in the adult Norwegian population. The empirical basis stems from two national interview surveys conducted in 1986. Data were analysed using contingency table analysis and multiple classification analysis (MCA). Totally, 64% knew that HIV/AIDS is caused by a virus. Homosexuals, drug-users, prostitutes and bisexuals were mentioned most often as groups at high risk of becoming infected. As to knowledge about the transmission of the infection, 95% were aware that sex between men and blood transfusion may be channels of infection, 93% recognized contaminated needles, and 85% sexual contact with a person of the opposite sex as possible routes of transmission. A substantial number of respondents were uncertain whether the infection can be transmitted through social contact. Knowledge about HIV/AIDS increased with diminishing age and with increased level of income and education. The direct effect of age upon knowledge may be explained by the theory of selective exposure, which predicts that the seeking of information is influenced by personal needs and interests. The social gradient of knowledge about HIV/AIDS reflects the general flow of information in a social system, and differences in the use of the media by the different social subgroups. Finally, the paper underlines the importance of filling the gaps in the public knowledge about how HIV/AIDS is not transmitted, in order to prevent unfounded fear, stigmatisation and discrimination.
","PeriodicalId":76239,"journal":{"name":"NIPH annals","volume":"11 1","pages":"19-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14531745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rotavirus was detected in 17 (19.5%) of the samples, while enteric adenoviruses were detected in two (2.3%). The relative frequency of rotavirus diarrhoea was significantly lower than that observed in developed countries. Further, serum samples from healthy donors, 61 school children and 50 adults, were examined for IgG and IgM antibodies. IgG antibodies were found in 73.8% of the children (mean age 9.6 years) and 86% of the adults (mean age 31.2 years). IgM antibodies were not detected. The test was more sensitive to the effect of antiamebic drugs than was a test for phagocytic activity. A 50% reduction in amebic motility was seen instantly after exposure to metronidazole (40 mg/l). A similar reduction of phagocytosis at the same concentration of the drug was seen only after two hours' preexposure. From a preprophylaxis incidence of 47.4 new cases of Rh(D) immunization per 10,000 pregnant women the incidence fell to 8.9 per 10,000 in 1982-83, and further to 7.1 per 10,000 in 1986. In the period 1980-83 58 per cent of the new antibodies within the Rh system were anti-D, while 42 per cent had other Rh specificities occurring in Rh(D) positive women. The incidence of new immunizations within the Kell and Duffy systems was also studied. Fifty per cent of the antibodies detected within the three blood group systems occurred in Rh positive gravidae. It is known from other studies that at least 30 per cent of pregnant women who develop blood group antibodies do so after the first assay is performed. Therefore the number of antibodies found in Rh positive women would increase significantly if they too were retested towards the end of pregnancy.
","PeriodicalId":76239,"journal":{"name":"NIPH annals","volume":"10 1","pages":"3-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14247500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
