Subjects were divided into 4 weight categories (underweight, normal weight, overweight and severe overweight) using an obesity index. ECG and ultrasound cardiography (UCG) were used for all subjects to measure their left ventricular mass (LVM), which was taken as an indicator of the effect of training. Among the 4 weight category groups, a significant difference in the percentage of fat between sedentary and active subjects was found in the normal weight category of males. Correlation between the percentage of fat and the obesity index was significant in both sedentary and active subjects of both the genders, but correlation coefficients were lower for active subjects than for sedentary ones. The percentage of fat tended to be very low in subjects with increased LVM. Additionally, a significant difference in the amount of fat was found between runners and soccer players in active males with normal weight. These results suggest that there were differing degrees of the effect of training on reducing body fat and that this effect is most notable in males with normal weight.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)</p>","PeriodicalId":76136,"journal":{"name":"Medical progress through technology","volume":"19 4","pages":"187-92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19045860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The evaluation showed good agreement between automatic and manual calculation. As the whole computational procedure is done by software, which is written in a common language (BASIC), a maximum of flexibility and portability is guaranteed. Estimation of relative changes of stroke volume and cardiac output as well as peripheral blood flow is possible without any manual interaction. In particular the recording system and the evaluation of the body sway data are highlighted. The objectives of the head sway signal analysis are the determination of sway components in the side-to-side (lateral) direction and forward-backward (anteroposterior) direction. It is anticipated that it will be possible to extract from the digitized data some information about the transfer characteristic and stability margin of the neuromuscular control system concerned with the maintenance of equilibrium. Additional information of potential clinical significance could be obtained by correlating the measured sway data with electromyographically determined changes in the activity of the main postural muscles. The information obtained is comparable to that gathered by more sophisticated, and more expensive conventional devices. A special feature is the easy portability of the system which permits collection of stabilometric data even in remote locations, while the analysis on which the diagnostic assessment is based can be performed at a later date in a central facility equipped with the necessary instrumentation.</p>","PeriodicalId":76136,"journal":{"name":"Medical progress through technology","volume":"19 1","pages":"55-60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19288835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
