One group of mothers, at hospital H1 (n = 46), had access to a CLC, while mothers at hospital H2 (n = 115) did not. Results showed that: (a) mothers at H1 had significantly (t = 2.33, p < .02) longer durations of breastfeeding (M = 3.1 months, SD = 1.2) than peers at H2 (M = 2.4 months, SD = 1.2); (b) a significantly greater proportion of mothers at H1 attained their intended duration of breastfeeding compared to mothers at H2 (Mann-Whitney U, one-tailed test, Z = 1.94, p < .05); and (c) in a stepwise multiple regression analysis, intended length of breastfeeding accounted for 18% of the variance in duration of breastfeeding, mothers' age 9%, and mothers' education 3%. The results support the theory of reasoned action and the theory of patient education.
","PeriodicalId":76125,"journal":{"name":"Maternal-child nursing journal","volume":"22 3","pages":"102-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18815331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author uses three areas to characterize the studies reviewed: The type of intervention, attrition rates, and outcome measures. Thirteen studies are abstracted and examined. School-age children may be considered a vulnerable population at risk for future development of HIV infection. Prevention needs to involve educational programs founded on children's knowledge and beliefs about AIDS. Scant literature exists on children's cognition and affective response to AIDS. In this study, 58 school-age children were interviewed to determine their attitudes, beliefs, and emotional response to AIDS. Findings indicate that, in this sample, children had little specific knowledge of AIDS etiology, transmission, or treatment. They expressed negative emotional response to the discussion of AIDS. Subjects were 86 children, 6-12 years old, who attended a rural elementary school in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Data consisted of children's perceptions of internal body parts as measured by responses to the Modified Gellert Body Knowledge Interview. A second set of body knowledge scores was generated when the children were retested 7 days after the original testing. A significant relationship (r = .70, p < .001) was found between the two body knowledge scores. Analysis of the body knowledge scores indicated that children's knowledge of the human body increases with age. A significant correlation was also found between grade level and body knowledge scores. Gender was unrelated to level of performance on the body knowledge instrument. The most commonly listed body parts were heart, brain, bones, veins, blood, and muscles. The reliability established for this instrument indicates that studies could be pursued to validate its effectiveness in determining school-age children's body knowledge.
","PeriodicalId":76125,"journal":{"name":"Maternal-child nursing journal","volume":"22 2","pages":"56-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18963727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Recognition of maternal identity in preterm and fullterm mothers.","authors":"M T Zabielski","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The purpose of this exploratory and descriptive study was to investigate the maternal role attainment process of the preterm mother by comparing the endpoint of the process--maternal identity--in preterm and fullterm mothers. Forty-two first-time mothers, 21 preterm mothers and 21 fullterm mothers, were interviewed once at approximately one year post-birth. Qualitative and quantitative phenomena were examined. Qualitative data were collected via semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were collected with instruments that measured maternal role attainment variables. Content analysis of the maternal identity recognition event revealed eight commonly discussed themes. Analysis of the quantitative data revealed no statistically significant relationships between length of gestation and any of the maternal role attainment variables. Also, no difference was found between preterm and fullterm mothers in the mean timing of the recognition of maternal identity. However, a 10-week difference in the median timing of maternal identity recognition was found. Sixty-two percent of the fullterm mothers recognized a maternal identity by two weeks after delivery, whereas only 24% of the preterm mothers experienced maternal identity recognition within this time frame. A statistically significant relationship was found between the timing of maternal identity recognition and maternal affective perception of the infant. The more positive the maternal affective perception of the infant, the earlier was the timing of maternal identity recognition. The study concluded that preterm mothers experienced a maternal role attainment process similar to fullterm mothers except that identity recognition was relatively delayed. The themes described by the preterm mothers tended to be qualitatively different and focused on denied maternal role experiences, especially denied contact with the infants and denied rights in relation to the infants.
","PeriodicalId":76125,"journal":{"name":"Maternal-child nursing journal","volume":"22 1","pages":"2-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19034974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors collected information about diagnoses, days hospitalized, siblings, and projective information. Data were analyzed using chi-square statistics. Independent variables of sex, age, and health were examined in a multivariate manner by fitting logistic regression models having indicator regressor variables to represent the various levels of these factors. The only regressor for these models that was significant was health state. Significant differences were found (p < .05 level) in color preferences of (a) children with adjustment problems and those who were well; (b) children with adjustment problems and those who were ill; (c) acutely ill and chronically ill children; and (d) physically disabled and acutely ill children.
