The therapist's primary concern is to th client, while the home coordinator, although concerned with the client's treatment, focused mainly on the sponsor's needs and responses. This unique model of integrating youth foster homes into a community mental health center provides clients with a needed noninstitutional evaluation and treatment option. It also may assist youths in acquiring skills needed for emancipation and independent living. Hopefully, other community mental health programs will explore prehospital family alternatives within their own clinical services and communities as an additional avenue of treatment for children and adolescents.</p>","PeriodicalId":76021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychiatric nursing and mental health services","volume":"19 3","pages":"17-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17324016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Preliminary research suggests that enduring and generalized adaptive changes in problematic behavior are engendered when behavior modification techniques like praise are augmented with cognitive techniques like self talk. The changes may be more enduring and generalized when these techniques are used not only with children but also with and by parents. However, research is needed to validate this working hypothesis as well as to determine the most effective behaviors and cognitions of parents necessary to bring about and maintain change. Until this research has been validated, clinicians may utilize these techniques both with and by parents and with children on the bases of face validity and of extending logically the findings in the areas of behavior modification and cognitive-behavioral techniques.</p>","PeriodicalId":76021,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychiatric nursing and mental health services","volume":"19 2","pages":"19-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17321842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
