{"title":"Structure-function relations in mammalian tendon: the effect of geometrical nonuniformity.","authors":"Y Lanir","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The stress-strain relations of mammalian tendon are analyzed in terms of the structure of its constituents. Two observed experimental features are accounted for by the present model: the effect of the elastic fibers on the stress-strain curve in the primary range and the effect of the geometrical diversity of the structural units of the collagen fibers on the nonlinearity of the stress-strain relations. The effect of the matrix-fiber interaction and the bending rigidity of the fiber are neglected. It is shown that the observed nonlinear characteristics of the stress-strain relations in the tendon can be accurately accounted for by the model. It is further shown that on the basis of this model, considerable insight into the structure and mechanics of the tendon's constituents can be obtained from results of simple stress-strain tests.</p>","PeriodicalId":75990,"journal":{"name":"Journal of bioengineering","volume":"2 1-2","pages":"119-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"11882457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Realistic, one-dimensional \"punch\" elements at the shield edges assure that muscle shear stresses remain bounded within experimentally measured values. For typical tissue, bearing pressure, deformation flow fields and edge slip stresses leading to tissue damage are calculated. Penetration depth to shield width ratios are up to 3.0. A piecewise linear, elastic approximation to the highly variable, nonlinear mechanical behavior of the tissue is used. Eight segments, each six centimeters in length, were coated and implanted in the canine thoracic aorta for periods ranging from 24 hours to six months. The results were compared with the eight untreated grafts implanted for similar periods as control experiments. Albumin coating resulted in a faster healing : cells appeared earlier and collagen development was greater. The most beneficial effect of that treatment was the reduction in embolization, as shown by the considerable decrease in kidney damage.</p>","PeriodicalId":75990,"journal":{"name":"Journal of bioengineering","volume":"2 1-2","pages":"79-91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"11368793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
