These antibodies were found in 9 patients (2 with renal disease, 2 with liver disease, 2 with rheumatic disease, 1 with achalasia, 1 with carcinoma of the pancreas and 1 with anemia). Colocalization studies with double immunofluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy using monoclonal antibodies against the 44 kD podocyte protein showed a similar fluorescence pattern for both antibodies. The chromosome is cleaved with a restriction endonuclease that cuts infrequently and subsequently separated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. The fragment pattern defines the genotype of the strain. The relatedness of strains is evaluated from the similarity of the fragment patterns. The quantitative comparison of fragment patterns allows the definition of the infrasubspecific rank of a clone. Till now, 9 patients with melanoma-induced dermatomyositis have been reported in the literature. In two tests using C.trachomatis-L2-infected BGM- and L 929 cells, respectively, several sera could not be evaluated by unspecific reactions. {"title":"[Fingerprinting with the polymerase chain reaction: confirmation of a Enterobacter cloacae epidemic in a neonatal intensive care unit].","authors":"A Voss,&nbsp;W J Melchers,&nbsp;P van den Hurk,&nbsp;K A Bergman,&nbsp;P E Verweij,&nbsp;J F Meis","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Between end December 1993 and end January 1994 a cluster of children infected/colonized with Enterobacter cloacae was seen in the neonatal intensive care unit of the University Hospital Nijmegen. The results of the epidemiological investigation are reported, which was aimed to differentiate between a random cluster of endogenously acquired Enterobacter strains and those possibly acquired exogenously via cross-infection. 5 isolates of the 7 patients were available for fingerprinting using interrepeat PCR. According to the fingerprint pattern, 4 of these isolates were identical, thereby suggesting cross-infection among the children. 3 neonates were colonized/infected with genotypically different isolates, suggesting that the infection/colonization developed endogenously. A control strain isolated from a patient at another ward showed the same genotype as the outbreak isolates.
